sampled at volo as part of cask days 2007
pours orangey red, crystal clear, with a small tan head. no lace.
aroma is nice. fruity - date and raisin. alcohol. great caramel. hint of citrus. nice bready malt base. bit of molasses?
taste is nice. low bitterness level, lower than i'd expect in a barleywine. bit of alcohol. bread and cracker malt. very light fruit. hint of toasty bread too. the malt is nice, but it really needs more and the nearly complete lack of any caramel type flavours is odd too.
mouthfeel is ok. thin for the style. very light carb is expected.
drinkability is good. fairly balanced. i thought it would need more bitterness, but it's actually pretty good. it tastes like more than 20IBU. a little more body and i think it could be great.

Obviously higher ABV and very weak barley wine. Watery, but barleywine aroma, likely needs considerable ageing. In the style, but I cannot detect anything beyond a basic barley taste. A weaker Nickel Brook, who are striving to do something above average.

Volo Cask Days 07.
A: Copper-amber, bubbly off-white head, no retention but it leaves a little leg/lace.
S: Alcohol is readily apparant, fruity esters, light caramel.
T: Dark fruit, brown sugar, tropical fruit, warming alcohol, modest bitterness.
M: Light to moderate body (well-attenuated), light carbonation.
D: Alright, but I'd like to try it with a little more age & carbonation.
