Got this at the De Molen beer shop in Bodegraven.
From a bottle into a snifter
EBC: 297
EBU: 102
24 degrees Plato
APPEARANCE: A clear, dark brown pour, almost black, yields a one finger, medium looking tan head with decent retention. Black body, transparent, with higher levels of carbonation evident. A splotchy wisp and ring remain leaving no real lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Lots of peat. Leather, smoky aromas, with earthy peat all over the place. Heavily peated scotch whisky and leather. Rather two dimensional in that sense.
TASTE: Heavy peat again, with leather notes up front, much like the nose had indicated. Lots of smoky and earthy peat right off the bat. Bold and lingering finish is much the same with some whisky and alcohol, as well as a touch of chocolate fighting for a place. Lots of peat, leather and smoky flavors that kind of overpower the base beer to a degree.
PALATE: Same as the other variants. Medium body with lower levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes sticky. Some heat lingers. Like the feel of a lot of these brews.
OVERALL: Another quality variant, but the heavily peated barrel seems to overpower the base beer. If you’re a peat lover, you’ll love this one, but I prefer earthy, smoky scotch barrels to be done with a little more restraint. Happy to have tried this and rather enjoyed it, but it’s a little too barrel dominant for my palate. Still, worth checking out, especially if you’re a fan of this type of spirit.
