Got this at the De Molen beer shop in Bodegraven.
From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled 18 July 2014
24*P
EBC: 342
EBU: 108
APPEARANCE: Pours our clear dark brown and yields a one finger, medium looking tan head with very good retention. Clear black body with no real carbonation evident. Head fades to a half wisp and bubbly ring. A foamy ring remains but doesn't leave any real lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Peat bomb if I've ever smelt one. Lots of earthy peat, some roasted notes, pure chocolate and sweet cream in there as well, but this is mostly peat and more peat. Really smoky.
TASTE: Lots of earthy, smoky peat flavors up front, with leather and lightly roasted malts at the swallow. Bold and lingering finish of earthy peat, smoke, leather, some roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate and a bit of sweet vanilla. Quite bitter and lots of smoky, earthy peat flavors.
PALATE: Medium body with lower levels of carbonation. A bit prickly on the palate, goes down fine and finishes slightly mouth-coating. Some heat lingers. Could be creamier and heavier for the style, but nothing overly wrong.
OVERALL: A lot of these peated scotch barrels seem to completely dominate the beer, and this one kind of follows suit. Makes it extra peaty since H&A used peated malt as well. This is a good beer and will definitely satisfy fans of the style, but for me, it's a little too barrel dominant for top scores. Still, well worth it, as I am generally a huge fan of the H&A variants. Cheers!

A: Motor oil!
S: Smoke!
T: Smoked mocha!
F: Just a tad lacking in this department.
O: Very interesting and quite unique!
Glad I could try this. I work at Stowe Beverage in Vermont and came in to work @ 5PM last Thursday and my co-worker said some nice English lady dropped off a box of beer for me. The box included this along with 8 other beers I've never tried before! I am not sure if I've ever met this woman, but, if I haven't, I definitely want to!

Pitch black, small mocha head at first, quick to a thick bubbly lace.
Tons of peat in the smell, backed by bacony smokiness, salty deeply roasted malts, chocolate, molasses, bit of vanilla and faint dark fruit.
Tons of peat up front and nice clear whisky, upgraded with a great smokiness. Rich dark bready malts, roasted grains, balanced with nice, robust dark chocolate. Sweet with lots burnt sugar, a bit of dry dark fruit and some dark licorice and vanilla. Finishes dry, burnt, very faint wood, with a mild bitterness kept in check by lingering sweetness.
Very smooth, medium bodied, low carbonation. Aftertaste with charcoal, peat, dark chocolate and burnt sugar.
The "peatiest" beer i've ever had, really nice, unfortunately a bit too sweet for me. Maybe aging it might make it a bit rougher with the dark malts, mine was just 3 months old. Still a great tasty IRS.
