Got this one at the De Molen beer shop in Bodegraven. Vintage stuff just showed up one day.
From a 750 into a snifter
Bottle 306 of 312
Brewed 15 December 2009
Bottled 24 February 2010
EBU: 100
EBC: 126
OG: 1.096
FG: 1.026
Cascade, Chinook and Galena hops
APPEARANCE: Pours a three finger, medium-thicker looking, creamy, off-white head with great retention. Clear maroon red with very low levels of carbonation. Slowly fades to a full foam cap and leaves some sticky lacing down the glass. Splotchy wisp and ring remain leaving some falling dots of lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Ripe fruits, mostly red and green fruit, apples, pears, berries, with some caramel and toffee and a hint of pine in there as well. Nice and fruity.
TASTE: Fruity up front with apples, berries and sweet toffee and caramel up front with a malty sweet, nutty and somewhat spicy swallow. Bold finish of plenty of caramel and toffee sweetness, red and green fruits, some spicy alcohol, piney bitterness and some citrus flavors as well. Hops are still there and it’s definitely on the bitter end of the spectrum for a barleywine.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly mouth-coating. Some spicy bitterness lingers as well.
OVERALL: Good stuff, and has held up really well. The hops are still there of course and the spicy alcohol and bitterness go well together. Not a typically sweet English barleywine per se, but an enjoyable beer nonetheless. Worth checking out if you get the chance. Cheers!
