Malts: pils, caramel, chocolate, roasted and brown
Hops: Saaz and Columbus
APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour yields a one finger, medium looking, slightly fizzy, light tan head with good retention. Clear black body with no carbonation evident. Head fades to half wisp and ring. Ring remains but no lacing down the glass. Okay, but lighter in color for the style.
SMELL: Lots of sweet cream, vanilla, coconut, as well as sweet caramel and butterscotch for sure. Maple syrup must be in here too. Oak aromas, with pure chocolate and a lightly roasted base. Nice nose, bold enough, and the butterscotch and maple syrup play a nice lead here.
TASTE: Flavorful stuff. Maple syrup, butterscotch, leather and charred oak up front. Some alcohol at the swallow, along with a little sharpness, then a bold finish of maple and butterscotch sweetness, vanilla, hints of coconut, dark chocolate and some bitter roasted grains. Bitter enough and balances the sweetness nicely. A bit of alcohol lingers. Interesting flavor profile and the maple syrup is definitely a fun element of the barrel here.
PALATE: Medium-full body and slightly lower carbonation. Semi creamy on the palate, enough weight, goes down fine with a bit of a sting and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. A bit of heat after the swallow.
OVEALL: An interesting brew. Not sure if I really like the flavor profile, as it’s a little sharp and piercing with the alcohol flavors, but the maple syrup and butterscotch from the barrels is an interesting twist on a classic H&V base beer. Not my favorite of the variants, but certainly something worth trying out.
