Good but not great. Nice barrel-and-wood notes, but little of the raisin-y sweetness of Pedro Ximenez. A sipper.

Got this one at the De Molen beer shop in Bodegraven.
From a bottle into a snifter
EBC: 48
EBU: 30
32*P
APPEARANCE: This was a slow foamer. A careful pour yields a 3+ finger, medium looking, slightly creamy, light cream colored head with very good retention. A clear burnt umber color with no carbonation evident. Head fades slowly to a full cap and clings to the sides of the glass. A splotchy wisp remains until the end and leaves touches of lacing behind as the glass empties. Besides the slow foamer deal, this is a good looking barleywine.
SMELL: Big nose of oak, cotton candy, maple, caramel and toffee notes, and lots of grapes and red wine. Strong sherry barrel here for sure. Really nice.
TASTE: Flavorful beginning with oak, sherry, grapes and cotton candy sweetness up front. Alcohol and oak at the swallow with a big and lingering finish of wine, grapes, oak, caramel, some toffee and cotton candy. Lots of sherry barrel notes with a big, sweet, malty base beer. Really good.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. A little fizzy on the palate, goes down fine with a bit of a burn and finishes quite sticky. Some heat lingers, but not much given the ABV.
OVERALL: Really, really good. Lots of barrel character here and big, hefty, malt forward base beer to rest it on. Not nearly as boozy as you might think it should be. Perhaps a bit too fizzy in the look and feel departments, but those are minor complaints, as on the whole, this is a real treat. The best barrel aged beer to come out of De Molen since they moved to the new location. When they get it right, it's outstanding. Too bad it doesn't happen as often as it used to. Highly, highly recommended.

Discussed this beer with Menno himself, at Anchorage Brewing, the day before The Culmination Festival 2015. Only one barrel of this was made. Amazing beer!

Served in a wide mouth flute glass at Cerzeria Esparte, in Conil Spain.
Appearance: dark Amber which comes off a bit cloudy with a head that is about 1/2" off the body coming off a white color.
Smell: Wine scent, with a hit of berries and grapes. Strong scent, I put this glass down and still have the scent hovering my nostrils.
Taste: might be a bit sour for some with heavy grape taste. Basically it is sweet with a touch of sourness to it. Absolutely tasty which comes off closer to a dessert.
Mouth: Medium carbonation and a sweet stickiness to it.
Overall: Great beer. Honestly couldn't pass it up on my trip to Spain. First time in Europe and definitely not the last. If you crave any barleywine, grab this it definitely won't disappoint. Salud!
