On tap at Kaapse Brouwers. Murky dark ruby with a very thin head that disappears instantly. Smells of cherries, macerated red fruit, walnuts, caramel and whiskey. Bitter-sweet taste, and also a bit fruit sour, with notes of cherries, caramel, walnuts, whiskey, sherry.

On-draught @ De Kaapse in Rotterdam during their barleywine event. 5.50 euro per 25cl pour - not an awful price given the wine-esque ABV of 15.20%.
HEAD: None.
BODY: Caramel-amber colour of average vibrance.
Looks pretty standard for a barleywine. I note no unique or special characteristics.
AROMA: Faint plum, Caramel, booze, rum-drenched raisin, vanilla, oak, whisky spice, peat, and some treacley sugars alongside Amber and Caramel malts. The peat and barrel character tame any malty sweetness.
Suggests a dry, rough barleywine that disguises its alcohol decently but doesn't showcase Bowmore all too well.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Plum wine, Caramel, dry wood (not recognizably oak), rough peat, treacley sweetness. Spruce, actually - maybe from the Hops. Raisin / withered grape. No vanilla or coconut, and the whisky spice is faint.
It's dry on the palate, prolonging flavour duration (to it's benefit). Full-bodied but rough and slightly coarse, if not dragging on the palate.
Prune, dates.
Well-carbonated. Has a warming alcohol presence, but it's not as boozy or hot as you'd expect a beer this high in alcohol to be. A bit gooey and chewy; certainly viscous.
There isn't a natural harmony of texture and taste. The build doesn't taste or feel like a gestalt whole. Balance could be dialed in more. Bowmore is not well showcased.
But the barrel doesn't eclipse the base; there's plenty of robust character coming from each, and they never clash. But the barrel character doesn't seem like the perfect choice to bring out the best in the taste.
OVERALL: A sipper, of course. Best consumed in small quantities; I don't think I'd want to take down a 33cl bottle of this solo. Those hoping for a world class Scotch barrel aged barleywine will be disappointed, but I think it's testament to De Molen's high quality that many of us have come to expect world class beers from them. I'm glad I tried it, but between this and the Bruichladdich Hel & Verdoemenis variants, it seems De Molen hasn't quite nailed down Scotch barrel beers the way they have bourbon.
High C+ (3.19) / ABOVE AVERAGE
