Pours a pitch black coloration with a medium, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of caramel malt and a lovely, peaty smokiness, as well as lighter notes of chocolate and licorice. Taste follows the nose, with a great balance of slightly roasted, sweet'ish caramel malt and subtle smoked, peaty notes, as well as lighter notes of dark fruit: raisins, honey and vanilla, with just a hint a hint of chocolate, licoriceand leather. Finishes bittersweet, with a light bitterness and some smoked peat and vanilla lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.
An excellent Scotch BA Imperial Stout with a superb balance of sweet and peaty notes, with a nice bitterness and slight roastiness to round things out. Proof once again that De Molen is one of the premier BA breweries in Europe.
