LCI @ BBF 2018, day 1. Good stuff, but not sure if it fully works. Esra on its own I love because of the thick, salty, umami flavor profile. Here the bourbon overpowers, lots of barrel, woody, buttery. Now it's just another very good BBA stout/porter.

Got this one from the liquor store guy in Maarssen
From a bottle into a snifter
EBC: 385
EBU: 93
Bottled 1 February 2018
APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour yields a 1+ finger, medium looking, fizzy, light tan head with okay retention. Clear bistre brown body with minimal carbonation evident. Head recedes to a half wisp and ring. A slight wisp remains until the end and leaves touches of lacing down the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Lots of wood and spirit on this one. Oak, whisky, a good dose of peated malts, with hints of vanilla and milk chocolate. Earthy and boozy. Bold.
TASTE: Woody with leather, peat and earthy tones up front, then lots of spirit at the swallow. Hints of milk chocolate and vanilla flavors as well, moving into a bold and boozy finish of wood, earthy peat flavors, leather, and sharp whisky linger on the palate. Rather spirit heavy here too.
PALATE: Medium body and slightly lower levels of carbonation. Creamy and silky on the palate, goes down smooth with a bit of a burn and finishes somewhat sticky on the palate. Decent heat lingers.
OVERALL: This is too spirit and wood heavy to be top of its class. It’s got some decent peated character under all that wood and booze, but it’s a little too sharp overall. The feel is nice though, so that ticks it up a notch. De Molen is has been hit and miss for years, though still worth checking out in hopes of finding another gem. Cheers!

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smell is a little odd and vinous, dare I say oxidized, with some red berries ands only hints of bourbon, vanilla and oak coming through. Taste is better than the nose, but still carries hints of vinous oxidation, with some sherry'esque red berry notes and cardboard, although there are some nice roasted, caramel malts, chocolate, vanilla and bourbon notes coming through as well, with hints of licorice and leather. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some vinous notes, vanilla and bourbon lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
I have to say that this is not one of De Molen's finest works, although their BA Stouts are usually exceptional. This definitely has a hint of oxidation to it, which puts some vinous, slightly tart notes to this that distract from and unfortunately overshadow the chocolate, vanilla and bourbon-soaked oak which should be the stars of the show here.
