Bommen & Granaten
Bommen & Granaten (Bombs & Grenades) got its name from being our strongest beer with 11% alc. Due to the high alcohol percentage, this barley wine can hit like a bomb. Beer & wine can sometimes be a little wicked, indeed. Hence the name, Bommen & Granaten. It’s also a nod to Captain Haddock from the Tintin comics, who certainly enjoyed a swig or two.
Specifications
Beer style: Special Beer
Beer category: Barley Wine
Taste palette: Ripe fruits, cake
Delicious with: Pate, foie gras, cream desserts, spicy and mature cheeses
The tastiest at temperature: 10-12℃

Poured copper color into a snifter with a light manilla colored head that leaves considerable lacing.
The flavor is a sweet combination of, I’m guessing, mostly malts with the necessary hops and yeast. The ingredient list shows sugar as well, so other than amplifying the ABV it also provides some sweetness. Tasty enough, yet almost one dimensional.
The feel is lightly viscous, a nice sipping beer.
OA, a very tasty yet simple take on the style, quite good.

Bommen & Granaten – from Brouwerij de Molen. 330 mL bottle purchased from the Die Bierothek, 20/06/24, Price unknown. Reviewed 25/06/24 (Review 3306). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Back label dated “07-11-27”. Stored on room temperature shelf at Bierothek, then room reefer at hotel (cold as it would go!). Served at 16.8 degrees C in a hotel-supplied glass. The final temperature was 18.9 degrees C. The bottle suggests 10-12 degrees C.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear.
Body – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Small (Maximum 0.3 cm, aggressive center pour), light buff, medium density and fizzy, poor retention, leaving a 0.2 – 0.3 cm crown and a partial cap constantly being renewed by an upwelling of bubbles.
Lacing – Good! Wide band of tiny to near-microscopic bubbles, evolving into torn curtains.
Aroma – 4 – Very fruity and sweet. No yeast, no malt, no alcohol (11 % ABV, according to the label).
Flavor – 4 – Follows the nose: sweet and fruity. No yeast, no hops, no alcohol. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Mild gastric burning.
Palate – 4 – Medium; slightly syrupy; soft but aggressive carbonation.
Final Impression and summation: 4 Quite a sugar bomb.

330 ml bottle, 11%, at Cardinal, Stavanger. Hops are Chinook and Challenger. Reddish brown colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of malts, molasses, red berries, strawberry jam. Sweet flavour, same elements as the aroma, also vinous notes, hints of oak and moderate piney hops.
