8 yo bottle. Pours a clear red-brown colour with a dense beige head with some retention. Aroma's: caramel fudge with red fruit. Retronasal there's toffee/fudge with some some tea leaves. Flavour is above moderate sweet with some fruity sourness. Almost full bodied. Alcohol is warming but not too sharp. Finishes a little bit ashy and moderate sweet. Still good after all these years.

Had the normal version two days ago, let's find out the difference.
Bottled on the 4th of September 2013, maybe not too fresh.

Looks the same, a hazy dark amber with no head, just a rim of off white foam. Little visible carbonation.

The sweet caramelised maltiness is pushed to the background by a big Cascade presence. Grapefruity hops dominate the smell but you can understand they is a hefty, malty beer underneath. The caramelised apple is still there.
Smells really nice.

The cascade dryhopping transforms the beer. It now has a much, much more hoppy taste. A nice fruity Cascade taste.
Again as with the basic beer the alcohol is rather present but still not much more than in a 11% beer. The hopping increases the drinkability.
It remains quite sweet but the big caramel taste is balanced out by the bitterness and citrus flavours.

A big and flavourful beer.

Mouthfeel remain nice and full, low carbonation.

Overall a little better than the standard version, way too drinkable for its ABV. Recommended.

Picked up at DeMolen, under the windmill in Bodegraven and served in my favorite DeMolen tall tulip. Dated 4 Sep 2012.
A-Pours a thick, hazy, burnt orange with just the slightest bit of white head.
S-Fresh, juicy citrus nose, hint of melon and maybe grapefruit,, with deep sweet, passionfruit. T-Very sweet flavor, tons of sticky sugars, loads of ripe orange, melon, citrus, mild bitterness on the back side with a little bit of alcohol burn on the nose and throat, but hidden super well at over 15%
M-Very full bodied, thick and chewy, with very mild carbonation. Sweet, rich, delicious! Wish I bought more then one, but their selection in their bottle shop was huge. Awesome stuff!

Once you have it, this is one of those beer you must tell your friends to try. It is a really special barleywine. Focused more on sweet fruits than hoppiness, it is a gamechanger.

Poured from the bottle into snifter sampler glasses, the beer was shared with three other samplers. The beer has a reddish tint in the glass, so it did not necessarily look like a barleywine. The aroma brought to mind fruit juice, and not the kind with 10% actual juice. This was like real fruit. The initial taste was fruity and nutty with a the hops hiding in the background. Notes of apple, pear, and caramel were very present. The sweetness was so diverse, it would be easy to identify other fruits hiding in the mix. The hops lend themselves to creating a tart sweetness as the taste matures in your mouth. This reinforces the fact that the fruits are not so overpowering as to be a synthetic candy fruit flavor. In the aftertaste, the sweetness continues to be smooth and easily masks the bomb of an 15.2 ABV. The thickness allows the warming aftertaste to linger, but not overpower. One may not even realize this beer hits you until well afterwards. Easily, this is among the best barleywines I have ever had.

Originally had this at The Copenhagen Beer Celebration in 2012 and thought it was fantastic. Another batch was made for BOREFTS and bottles were for sale in the shop as well.

From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled on 4 September 2012

APPEARANCE: Pours a small, medium looking, off-white head that quickly disappears leaving a faint wisp and ring behind. Clear, burnt orange in color with no carbonation evident. A slight ring remains but leaves no lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Caramel and toffee with lots of cascade hop on the nose. The cascade is quite wonderful, with plenty of honeydew melon, citrus orange peel and lemon aromas. Very bold and fruity, with lots of citrus and melon everywhere. Really stellar stuff.

TASTE: A malty beginning with lots of toffee and caramel, as well as melon sweetness and red fruit flavors from the base beer. The swallow brings out more cirtus lemon, some soapy notes and alcohol as well. A bold and lingering aftertaste bursts of caramel sweetness, orange peel and lemon citrus, light soapy notes and alcohol. Boozy, but certainly complex and flavorful. Very interesting and certainly delicious, though the booze keeps it from being world class.

PALATE: Full body with modest levels of carbonation. Syrupy and oily on the palate, creamy enough as well, goes down smooth and finishes quite sticky on the palate. Minimal bite and very little heat lingers. A bit too sticky perhaps, but big and syrupy, which is great for the style. Not nearly as hot as the flavor might have suggested.

OVERALL: This was awesome on tap, and the bottles have turned out just as good. Really flavorful and complex, with a big, full, syrupy feel to it. This is one worth drinking in mass quantities while it's still around. Great beer Menno. Make it a regular.

Had this for the first time on tap at Borefts but this review is from a bottle that I took home.

Poured from a 33cl bottle into a de Molen tasting glass.

Looks copper to amber red, slightly hazy and 1mm of foam yet a little bit of carbonation is visible.

Perfect on the nose. Great melon, pine and a bit of citrus.

Great flavor with a little sweetnes from the sturdy malt backbone. Wonderful hop flavors that follow the nose perfectly.

A medium body and more carbonation than I expected but not disturbing or overpowering in any way.

This might very well be the perfect barleywine that has some characteristics you'd expect on a IPA. It makes for a very flavorful and pleasant beer. Recomended. Get it if you can.

Look: the beer pours an hazy orange color with a small head.
Smell: Sweet, candy sugar, bitter herbal hops, pine, pepper, grapefruit, honey, maple syrup.
Taste: Sweet, warming alcohol, lot of fruits (pineapple, orange, grapefruits). Honey and maple syrup. Aftertaste is more bitter than the regular version (which is overly sweet). The alcohol is warming and quite well hidden.
Mouthfeel: It has actually some carbonation (not that obvious with the regular version), thick and sticky.
Overall: An enormous improvement of the regular version. Wish this one came in bottles
