On draft at Churchkey in D.C.
The beer has a near black appearance with a wispy head. Aromas of sweet malt, char, roast, booze. Too sweet and lacking bourbon character. I got excited when I read this was partially aged in Pappy van Winkle barrels, but this didn't translate to the flavor. Thin body and a bit cloying. This one missed the mark for me.

On tap at the brewery last night. From what a Foothill's employee explained to me and my buddies, who were fortunate enough to try this special brew before it was all gone, this was the Total Eclipse Stout after nine weeks in Pappy Van Winkle barrels. This was the "second run" for the barrels, after People's Porter had come out of them. The result was less straight bourbon taste than what is noticeable in BA People's Porter. Noteworthy flavors and aromas were oak and vanilla. Maybe some light coconut as well. This brew has much more oak, whereas BA People's Porter has much more actual bourbon character. This is far superior to BA People's Porter, in my opinion. The one draw back was that it was relatively thin for a stout. Beyond this, I have no complaints. The short time period in the barrels results in a very drinkable, yet complex stout. It is a wonderful barrel aged offering from Foothill's and hopefully they will make it again.
