A: Head not as prominent as other nitro stouts. Otherwise similar with dark black color light brown head.

S: Oaky and roasty.

T: Subtle sweet flavor. Hints of roasted malt and oak flavor.

M: Sweet and easy start with slightly bitter finish.

Overall: One of the better stouts I've had. It wasn't as smooth as others but it had a lot more prominent flavors that I have been missing from others.

A - Black beer with a creamy head that didn't stick around for long and didn't leave much on the sides.

S - Smells of smoke, dry roast, toasted malts, and some meat. Not really what I was expecting with a dry stout.

T - Taste is a lot in line with the nose. There's some interesting meat and smoke in there. Good roast, little bit of a dry finish. Not great, taste is slightly watered down at the end.

M - A little thin and watery, softer carbonation. Not feeling this.

O - Didn't care much for this. Didn't finish well, flavors were kind of interesting, but fell flat. Wouldn't drink this again.

Drank at the brew pub as a part of the sampler...This was the highlight of the sampler...Pours a light black with a really good creamy and think light tan head, superb lacing...The aroma and taste both have some nice malts, chocolate, a little coffee, a nice dry finish.

Super fun and easy to drink

On-cask at the brewpub.

This was an Irish stout in the style of Murphy's and Beamish, not Guinness. The body was smooth and very drinkable without much carbonation. The taste and aroma are of dark roasted coffee with a bit of semi-sweet chocolate. Overall a classic Irish stout and maybe the best option at Grizzly Peak. Delicious.

Sampled on-tap at Grizzly Peak, this DIS pours a dark opaque black with some tight bubbles. The creamy thick head, characteristic of the style, recedes slowly and leaves some great lace.

Not a terribly aromatic beer with just a bit of roasted malt. Some toasty sweetness as well. Fairly uneventful.

Very creamy and heavily malty. Roasty and smooth with some smoke and a slight woody bourbon twang. Some cocoa is present as well. A good example of a DIS; a solid selection for sure.

Very creamy, frothy, and moderately dry. Fairly low carbonation makes for an even creamier texture. Not too thick, but satisfying. Not my favorite DIS but a solid beer for sure.

Sample at the brewpub: Pours opaque black with a compact dark brown head that has good retention. Constant sheet of lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee along with some chocolate and malt. Medium-bodied and dry with roasted coffee and light hops flavor, as well as a bit of dark chocolate. The finish is dry and roasty with a short-lived hops aftertaste. Above average, but not by a whole lot.

Black with a white creamy head from the nitro, lacey. Great smoke but over the top bitterness. Did not get any finsih or aftertaste of sweetness. Hmm...what about on cask? Roastiness not what I would expect from another Irish stout but altogether,maybe it's the nitro,not my favorite stout.

Originally reviewed on January 21, 2005. On tap at the brewpub. Dark black with a rim of coffee and cream. Light charred beef aroma. Rich dark roast flavor, impossibly dense and full of character and body in roast, bacon, high levels of french cream and toast. Smokey. Finishes with a slightly metallic dry finish.

Jet black beer topped by a dense, light brown head. Good retention with thick foam on the sides of the glass. The aroma was predominantly roasted, with some sweetness and a hint of chocolate. The flavour balanced to the malty sweet and caramel side, with a light bitterness. The roasted malts were dominant and only slightly drying until the finish, where they made more of an impact. Medium/light body and low carbonation with a restrained astringency. Overall, an enjoyable beer. There was just a little too much residual sugar and caramel sweetness for my taste.

County Cork Irish stout from the cask. Poured with a black body with just a hint of red and a beautiful tan head. I have never had a cask ale with a head like this. There is a touch of hops on the nose, possibably kent goldings variety. Carbonation is low to moderate and the body quite light. The major flavor characteristic is roasted barley.

This is a fine example of a dry stout. I think if Guinness were served from a beer engine, this is what you'd get. If you have a fondness for the stout from Dublin, head to Grizzly Peak.

In a noninck pint this beer is black with a strong foamy head that does not move. Full 1/4 inch thick foam covers all over the glass. Not nitro but worked over hard by a stiff handpumped cask, such a rare serving for the style and much appreciated.

Taste is smooth and round from the casking but still very roasty and dry but balanced well enough. Feels like a very high attenuation, just about bone dry, but with enough hints of base malts. Long roasty finish with specks of earthy, minty hops is satisfying. As for scents, it follows suit with a similar range of roasty, nutty, and almost woody notes.

The cask mouthfeel is wonderful but just short of perfect, pretty rare that an Irish dry is actually on cask so no worry that it seemed a couple days old.

This dry stout is flying its colors damn well, much so since I actually enjoyed it - rare for a style I don’t really go after. Ît also gets served at a perfect 55F temperature.

This cask stout has a heavy roasted aroma. The full heavy body help bring out an overall roasted chocolate malt profile. The head leaves a brown lace down the glass even after several minutes of sitting. Just a twang of bitterness in the finish help solidify this brew in the memory.
