Maybe you've already become acquainted with Hjejlen? Maybe you haven't? Regardless, the name is local and comes from the world's oldest paddle steamer in operation, which sails here in Silkeborg. Therefore, Hjejlen is brewed as a classic ale according to the best belief of how beers were brewed 150 years ago.

Copenhagen 8/8 2020. 50 cl bottle from Kvickly, Søtorvet, Silkeborg. Grauballe’s usual design with a black circle and a rendering of steamboat Hjejlen. This should be ale as it was brewed in 1861.

Pours unclear amber with a small, bubbly off-white head. Settles as thin, patchy layer of foam unable to cover the surface of the beer. No lacing.

Aroma is moderately intense with a sweet odor of caramel mingling with a lightly sour odor. Toffee. Herbal touch. Cooked vegetables.

Light carbonation. Medium thick, oily, almost flat texture.

Flavor is medium intense with a rather strong sweetness followed by a moderate bitterness. Aftertaste is sweetish and lingers for a while. Finish is sweet.

They must have liked very sweet and flat beer back in the 19th century.
