a very nice pour of stout here, oaty and smooth, not overly roasty, an easy daytime drinker, a more versatile food beer too than i think many stouts are, and just a delight to drink on, subtle and not too heavy. deep brown in color with a cream inch of head on it, a nutty and yeasty aroma with some dark chocolate and good espresso bean character there too, almost meaty for a flash without being heavy, and quite earthy and dry, some middle richness but an almost clay-like thing later on, very true to style but with plenty of personality too, nice! aromatics of licorice and old wood and dark bread toast, along with a recognizable english type yeast giving it some depth, light on the hops but the roast kind of fills in for that, baking chocolate, the earthy but kind of warming oats are obvious as well, very nicely built. lots of flavor for a lower alcohol brew, kind of a thing in scotland. a hint of smoke but its well short of burnt and charry on the darkest end, some lighter cocoa character, good coffee, dark leather, and crispy pizza crust, along with a light cola note and maybe a raisin fruity moment, smooth as can be, silky even, and dry at the end. very tidy little brew that warms up well and certainly checks all the boxes for the style. there is some subtle malt nuance here, not just the basics to me, and there is quite a bit of depth for a beer this easy drinking. very solid, good introduction to this brewery, tight and professional take on the style.
