500 ml bottle, BB date 09.17, from Aberdeen Country Fair. ABV is 5.0%, IBU 55. Nearly black colour, small beige head. Fresh aroma of piney and grapefruity hops on a background of roast malts. Decent flavour, again piney and fruity hops on a background of medium roast malts, fairly dry. Moderate bitterness.

L: Dark, dark black.
S: Grapefruit and slight orange. Some licorice. Slight ester and alcohol. Blackberries.
T: Blackberries for a while. Then smokey malt, slight bread, apple, grapefruit, some pine.
M: More carbonated than expected. Quite thick.
O: Not the greatest example of the style but a good beer with decent balance. Aftertaste of slight overmalt and smoke.

500ml bottle, with the awesome, and totally apt subtitle of 'an oxymoronic ale'.
This beer pours a deep, dark, murky brown colour, with two fingers of puffy, rocky, and certainly bubbly beige head, which leaves some stellar tightly cobwebbed lace around the glass as it slowly blows off.
It smells of slightly roasted caramel malt, a bit of edgy wheat graininess, faint dry citrus rind, equally ethereal grassy, piney, and floral bitter esters, and soft dark cocoa biscuits. The taste is sharp pine and floral-tinged hops right of the bat, followed shortly by a chocolate wafer-informed dry caramel malt, subtle day-old coffee, and tame muddled citrus rind.
The bubbles are quite sedate, almost to the point of putting out an APB, the body a sturdy medium weight, and plainly smooth, nothing really worthy writing (home) about. It finishes off-dry, the still barely toasted caramel malt letting its wheat cohort have a minor say, among the underwhelming din of the mixed, matched and somewhat pithy lingering pine and citrus hoppiness.
Definitely leaning more towards the IPA side of this hybrid style - the roasted dark character being limited at best. Oh well - I can't find fault in that, as the 'blackening' of perfectly good IPAs (not to mention the various nonsense over its naming conventions) has never sat all that well with me. Whatever - worthy of checking out, all the same.
