Bullfrog Brewery "Old Gold Kriek"
$8/10.5 oz. on tap @ Union Tavern, Philadelphia, PA on 4 August 2017
Notes: From the brewery: "100% wild ale, fermented with our Grrrz yeast culture, and aged in oak foudres for a year. Sublimely sour, dry, earthy, complex, slightly herbal, and darkly fruity." Question - is it really a "100% wild ale" if you've added yeast, regardless of where that yeast came from? Moving on... slightly hazy pinkish-red body. No head whatsoever. The aroma is "tart" with some light cherry and some earthiness. The flavor follows: lightly sweetish, lightly tart, cherry like a Maraschino. Dry finish with just a hint of oak. Easy to drink. Not at all challenging. Balanced, refreshing, medium-light in body and gently crisp.

-Served in chalice, from tap @ location.
A: Per style there was very little if any, head formation by the time the glass reached my table. Likewise there was no means for lacing. Upon close inspection a carbonation presence was hard to detect, but let’s just say almost non-existent.
S: Some sour fruit on the nose was very clean and precise. Mostly cherries I gather, with some dark sweetened plums. A touch of acidic nature of mid-level reaches the nose. Very soothing and enjoyable to partake in for a length of time.
T: The flavor, as was with the nose, was very clean, sweet dark fruit and acidic malts are accented by sour cherries and plums. Add in some blackberries with a mid-range funk and subtle wine-oak notes. Sweet dark fruitiness as well some musky herbal hops add to the enjoyment.
M: Good mouthful, nice body and fullness per style, warming, medium depth, slick in texture.
O: From the first sip I found this outstanding, sweet dark fruit, soothing acidity, with an easy to drink approach. The sourness is very well refined, and easy to consume. High recommend.

Old Gold Kriek is not reddish at all, which was a little surprising. However, the taste is amazing: oak, cherry, funk, and very sour. Bullfrog does a great job with wild fruited sours.

Poured a golden body with a hint of redness and left little head and lace. Tart and sour cherry aroma with hints of yeast/funk with wood. Balanced beer that is smooth thanks to wood aspect and the balance is from both sweet and sour/tart cherry flavors with a bit of funkiness and then finishes with just a touch of sweetness/maltiness..

Pours a hazy lemon gold with a pink tinted white pillowy head.
Smells of tart cherries, citrus, and cider vinegar.
Flavor is citrus tart, slight hint of cherry, with a bretty finish over tame bready malt.
Medium body with a stinging carbonation.
My first from this brewery is an odd beer but I really liked it. I enjoy sour beers and beers that use cherry and this is both, so for me it's a real winner. It does feel Belgian in its sourness which is a good accomplishment. Definitely try this while you can if you like sours.

Poured into a small chalice: color is pale straw with a feint reddish hue, head is off white and does not really present with much depth, mainly a ring and lacing.
Smell big on the oak and some solid hop earthiness then some mild funk and fruitiness, quite heavy towards a vinous aroma.
Taste is also large oak and funk, fairly tart, then some lingering horse blanket like flavors but there masked by some of the subtle cherry sweetness and hops.
Mouthfeel is very pleasant for such funky strange beer, not too drying or cloying with a great lingering funkiness.
Overall, this is a great and funky beer, i keep coming back to eat each time I'm at the Bullfrog in the past few weeks.

Not sure if this is the same beer as reviewed previously. On tap at Bullfrog. Says this beer is aged 2 yrs in oak foudres w sour cherries & 100% wild yeast. Nice golden color with mild lacing. Smells of intense funk and mild sourness with oak. No cherry in the nose. Taste follows nose with lots of oak and barnyard funk and mild tartness, I didn't pick up much sour cherry if any, maybe contributes to the tartness. Nice clean mouthfeel, very easy drinking for 8%. Pretty dry finish. I enjoyed this beer quite a bit.
