Impy stout on tap! Made my evening seeing this.

A- pours jet black with a one finger tan head. Would like to see a head that's maybe a little more robust, but I'll deal

S- weak aroma of bourbon. Oh god, when I got a whiff of that, I was hoping it wasn't going to be a bomb

T- it's actually not much of a bomb, but the bourbon does come through a lot. Balanced nicely with a little sweetness too.

M- thick. Syrupy. Bliss

D- this is a sipper. No doubt about it. If you're finishing a pint in 15 minutes, YOU'RE NOT DOING IT RIGHT. I'd like to try this again

Master Blaster has a pitch black body that manages to look heavy despite being poured from a cask. The brown head is thin and wispy. It looks like it wants to stick to the glass, but doesn't quite manage to leave any lacing behind. Still, a good looking pour from the hand pump.

The aroma is pretty woody, but also fairly boozy. A good mix of dark fruit and chocolate pop up also.

Master Blaster brings me about what I would expect after the aroma. Dark fruits soaked in rum, with a lot of hot booze to accompany them. Next comes a little bit of vanilla and a big dose of woody oak. The malt takes over next, with chocolate, coffee and a little bit of sweetness. The finish is a bit hot with a noticeable alcohol flavor to it.

The look and feel of this beer are both good for being naturally carbonated, which makes me think the hand pump is a good choice for this beer.

Master Blaster isn't a bad beer, but even for a 10%ABV double stout, it is a little bit hot and boozy. My favorite part about the beer is definitely that it is well-suited to the hand pump. I definitely don't get the impression that it was thrown on cask without any thought.

On cask at Bullfrog on 1/15/11 served in a short glass. This brew appears a dark brown with ruby clarity around the edges that is evident without even holding it to the light. A finger of rich, creamy tan head appears and holds nicely and forms a wall of lace on the glass with every sip.

The aroma upfront is bold with a scent of dark skinned fruits somewhat like plums or raisins. There is a light alcohol kiss that is evident but not as bold as expected for the 10%. Further smells reveal a scent of chocolate that is blended well with the other scents.

This brew tastes dark and fruity much like the aroma led on. It is bold with alcohol and fruity esters that are understandable and expected for the abv but maybe a little too fruity for my taste. The bitterness seemingly comes from roasted grain primarily with a little influence from the hops. A lingering grain bitterness a bit like coffee lasts inside the mouth clashing a bit with fruity raisin-like flavors.

This is a medium to full bodied offering that is exceptionally smooth in the feel with a light amount of carbonation. Easy drinking for 10% but having one of these was more than enough for me. Those that enjoy the fruitier side of this style will probably enjoy this brew more than I give it credit for. However, for my taste I look for more roast quality.

On cask at Bullfrog on 12/31/10.

A - Black liquid with the deepest of rich red highlights around the edges and half an inch of craggy burnt mocha foam on top that reduced to a patchy retention and thick, frothy lace.

S - Initial aroma combines leather, light soy sauce tanginess and a hint of chocolate as well as traces of licorice, roasted coffee and earthy hops.

T - Overall, Master Blaster boasts wuite the complex flavor profile. Opens with a bittersweet blend of chocolate and coffee notes, then segues into a dry, leathery character in the backend. Sprinkle in a dash of earthy hop bitterness, a hint of tangy, salty soy sauce and dark licorice and you begin to scratch the surface of this tasty Imperial Stout. And WOW... there is virtually no alcohol presence whatsoever!

M - Medium bodied with an oily texture and very little alcohol warmth. Finish is semi-dry and bitter with a bit of residual sweetness on the palate.

D - This Imperial Stout falls somewhere between Dark Lord and Expedition and is quite complex in its own right. Tasty too. And the cask conditioning really enhances the overall drinkability and smoothness of the brew. Very well done!
