Houblonius Maximus, a quintuple ale (hence I call it a quad) served on cask.
A: The ale arrived with a dull cask look, no head save for some larger bubbles. The color is markedly similar to a quad, a ruby brown mixture that is imposing.
S: The aroma, even for a cask, is big. Dark fruits and brown sugars are plentiful, as are biscuity malts. Be careful.
T: The taste is just as I expected, an overwhelming quad. Even from the cask, the malty strength and supporting yeast/spice additions are intense. Darker malts, caramel and biscuits, support brown sugar, raisins and even pears. The result is a far-ranging taste that can't hide its might. I'm glad it came in a snifter.
M: The mouthfeel is filling, sweet and bold with plenty of thick grains to keep up the strength. A snifter'll do ya good.
D: One and done, just to big to really spend time with. Nice to see the envelop pushed a little in the darker, fuller Belgian arena.
