A growler filled at the brewery last weekend.

A: Pale, light, straw yellow, one of the lighter non-macro beers I've come across. Translucent, the paleness can't conceal any imperfections. A white head, over a finger on the first few pours, wipes away to a thin band.

S: The light beechwood smoke leaves its mark, cancelling out the hops and pale malts entirely. But that smoke is firm, sweet even, with a cured finish. Very aromatic.

T: Pale biscuity malts, even with the beechwood smokiness, drive the ale with their toasted lightness. After that initial pass, the smoke kicks in with a mild sweetness - think cured meats toned down a bit. The smoothness is nice, the smoke isn't dominating. Very light too, the alcohol never registers as being too strong. In fact, the smoke transitions nicely into an alefruity finish, heavy on dry sweetness. A pairing that I don't think I could ever come up with.

M: Smooth and light, the sweet fruity flavors a perfect finish to the light beechwood smoke. Bullfrog hasn't lost a step in terms of inventiveness.

Thanks to tenderbranson69 for the growler share -enjoyed chilled in a shaker pint.

The color is apropos to kolsch, golden and slightly chill hazed with thick creamy white head with tight bead. The smell is very campfire-esque with subtle sweet elements at times, but the woody smoke ester has a nice aroma -not burned per se, but aromatic smokiness that accentuates the malt. The feel is good with nice smooth body, mild sweetness and enough body to keep the smoke from overpowering the rest of the beer with moderate carbonation and semi-dry finish.

The flavor is above average, however it is more of a smoked beer than a kolsch, not that there is anything wrong with that. The flavor has a nice woody smokiness which still allows some of the sweetness from the malt poke through at times with a nice mellow yeast tinge that adds a light fruity quality, but overall you should not pick this up unless you enjoy smoked beer. I think it is classified properly here in that I enjoyed it for the smoke qualities but I was ready for another after the first which is a good testament to the drinkability in my opinion.

"A light bodied kolsch style ale with a mild aromatic smokiness from the german beechwood smoked malt."

Growler secured over the weekend and poured into a pilsner glass. The brew appears a perfectly clear straw yellow color with a rich white frothy cap. Spotty to webby stringy lace sticks to the glass.

The smell is muted but has a grainy scent that as it gets warmer opens up with more intense smoked character smelling of smoked meats. It is a fine smelling brew but quite a contrasting mix of character to te expectations of the base brew.

The tastes initially includes a combo of breakfast meats like smoky ham ans bacon that gives way to a grainy sweetness. A light contrasting herbal hop presence is felt that takes the brew off in a dfferent direction. Overall not bad.

This is a medium bodied brew with moderate carbonation. For a smoked brew it finishes surprisingly crisp, clean and easy drinking which are the only real indications of the base brew. Certainly a nice unique offering that is worth a try.
