Pours clear medium dark with a white head. Aroma is sweet caramel with vanilla notes. Taste reinforces the aroma of sweet caramel and lightly roasted malt but with an initial metallic twang. Nutty sweet and devoid of hops. The finish improves and the metallic aspect fades after a couple sips leaving just burnt caramel with a sweet ending. If this was half of what it cost at my local Total Wine store I would definitely pick up a case.

Poured from a clear 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass. Pours a clear brown amber in color, with an inch or so of creamy tan foam which settles to a cap yielding some spotty lacing.

Caramel malts on the nose, bit of chocolate and some earthy hops. Nice aroma and not overly sweet.

Taste follows the nose with some light caramel and a touch of toasted coarseness. Not too viscous from the caramel and nicely carbonated with a bit o cherry like fruit on a lingering clean finish. Sweetness does become more apparent as the carbonation settles yet the feel and drink remain good.

Deep amber, almost brown in colour. Aggressive pour generated a two finger tan head. Head fell quickly to a thin cap

Quite a faint smell, just a bit of pilsner like grassiness, and a hit of roasted malt.

Taste leans toward the malty side, caramel is most prominent, along with a slightly roasted flavour to finish.

Fuller bodied than your average Mexican Lager, but it leaves a bit of a filmy feeling on the tongue.

This was a strange one, and I'm not sure that it could really be considered a dunkel, but it felt closer to that than a vienna. Not without its charm.

Poured from a clear 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a brownish/amber color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of bready malts. Taste is malty, somewhat bready, caramel, smooth and easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a tasty beer and a good example of this style.

From a clear bottle. Best by date was about three months ago. Pours clear mohagony with a modest off white head and the ring stays quite a long time. Some modest lacings. Aroma is dark caramel and faint hops.
Taste is dark caramel malts with some euro hops in the finish. Mouthfeel is good with just right carbonation. Easy drinker, slightly too sweet for my taste but most dark beers are.

You wouldn't tell by the looks that Mexicali is a kind of craft brewery from Mexico, the bottle suggest a local cheap beer. Picked up this dark lager, not really knowing what to expect and there's not that much to say about it either - except that unlike european dark lagers, its taste is quite mild and doesn't have that remarkable lager taste (which is a good point, for me)... It is easy to drink, feels quite pleasant, nothing against it. I do not regret having chosen this one!

A - Clear dark copper color. Fairly large, foamy, bubbly, off-white head. Disappears pretty fast with almost no lace left.

S - Toasted nutty/grainy malt. Sweet aroma with a touch of toffee and caramel. Hints of grassy hops and a minerally aroma.

T - Similar to the nose with a touch more caramel/toffee sweetness. Initially there is a pretty strong grainy taste that is present throughout. Just a faint hint of hop, primarily grassy flavors. Touch of fruitiness that only adds to the sweetness at the finish.

M - Light body with average carbonation. A sweet, dry feel on the finish.

D - A little too sweet and drying to be all that drinkable. Not really balanced, just too sweet and malty, but not in an enjoyable way.

Notes: Nothing special here. Plenty of grainy and sweet malt. About what I was expecting (maybe a little better given this is a German style from Mexico). Not horrible, but I probably wouldn't search for this.

Says it is a Dunkel so I did breakout the Pilsner glass.

Clear brown lager with a good tan colored head.

Smell is sweet and malty with what smells like Munich malt in here. Trace of toasted grain and lemon hop aroma. No trace of skunk from the clear bottle.

Taste starts malty with a toasted grain flavor and a bit of raisin flavor. Good malty flavor grains and fruity, I can't fault this for flavor.

Mouthfeel is good.

Not bad at all for a Mexican beer. This is quite superior to this company's regular beer. Having said that, this isn't quite Negra Modelo or a German version of the style. Still I would have no problems drinking this again.

A: Looks nice, dence cloudy white head and extremely high carbonation. Ever so slighty opaque.

S: Instant skunk and "chemicals". Some kind of soggy wood and herbs.

T: Like a standard American macro. Skunky again and not much else. Barely there hops and grains.

M: Great actually, with the high carbonation. Tiny bubbles make it feel nice on the tongue. Wish they accompanied a better taste.

O: I don't really like it. It's not horrible but I wouldn't buy it again.

Poured into a New Belgium globe. The beer is the deepest of ruby reds, more mahogany really. The light cream colored head dissipates quickly to a wisp. Surprisingly decent lacing. The beer smells skunky, naturally from the clear bottle. Tastes like a malty adjunct lager with a slightly carbonated finish. The mouthfeel is fairly light bodied.

Overall, I'm not sure what i expected from this one, but I suppose on a relative basis, this one isn't any worse than any of the other Mexican lagers out there, but it's not a whole lot better either. Not quite sure why i drank it out of a globe glass, but it probably made the appearance a tad better than it otherwise would have been. Not a fan of the skunked clear bottled beers.

REVIEW # 500!

Consumed at LAX Radisson beer dinner, 07/16/08.

This beer bears no resemblance to a typical American macro except for its light caramel/amber color (still darker than most BMC). A fine tan head appears then disappears fairly quickly, leaving behind a bashful little ring of bubbles. No lacing to speak of.

Aroma is a sticking point, with a skunky, metallic odor.

Flavor, however, is good. Caramel malt and light bitterness are the primary flavors. Good carbonation. Smooth and easy to drink, this one is miles better than most lawnmower beers.

Am I going to seek it out? No. But I'll drink a bottle again if I come across an unguarded one.

A: Dark intense color in a light full body, good prominent head with mixed bubbles that dissipates slowly leaving behind good traces on the glass. Reddish hues and brown soul little carbonation.

S: Intense toasted malt, little sweetness can be smelt but really faint what is predominant is the barley.

T: Full toasted malt again for a good combination between the nose and the tongue, the sweetness is almost imperceptible and some bitterness can be felt.

M: Refreshing, excellent body, pure and straight combination simple but well balanced.

L- Dark brown body, filtered. Fluffy off-white head with medium retention.
S- Slightly toasted caramel malts and a bit of corn. Supposedly this does not have corn.
T- Bread, caramel and toasted malts.
F- Medium.
O- I expected worse, but this is a decent cheap beer. Ok.

Pours a clear brown with a 1/2 inch fizzy light brown head that settles to a film on the top of the beer. Small dots of lace slide back down into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, and some skunky aromas. Taste is of toasted malt and some caramel flavors. A very mild roasty bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a crisp level of carbonation with a bubbly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty decent beer that I got as part of a sampler pack but not something I would buy on my own.

When poured the color was a dark amber brown with a fair amount of tan foam and some lace. The smell of roasted malts along with a hint of hops filled the nose with a pleasant aroma. The taste was of roasted malts and caramel. Caramel really stood out. It also had a sour/tart feel in the mouth. The sour/tart finish was the low point of this beer. The flavor and color was the high point!

Here's a breakoff from the standard Mexican beers commonly spotted at supermarkets and Mexican restaurants. Dark beer that comes in a clear bottle...I hate thinking it's a dark bottle at first then realizing it was a clear one all along. On to the beer:

Leather brown color with a fuzzy head on top with decent head size and retenion. The smell is at least interesting; there's pie crust, sweet bread, and subtle breaks of toffee. And now to taste...fizzy and light bodied in the mouth. Pie crust and dried caramel bits take the show, then the bitterness shows up with a sharp and dominant note that ends each drink. That fizzy carbonation keeps getting in the way of the overall flavor...STOP IT! (Update: the carbonation mellows the more you drink it). There's some malt floating in there which isn't being worked on much to get more sweet ol' goodness. No skunk to be found in this clear bottled brew.

It's decent and was nice to break off from the usual Mexican beers, but I'll stick to the more available Negra Modelo when I want a dark Mexican beer.
