This beer tastes very bad, this was one of my few drain pours. There´s almost nothing right with this one, maybe only the color, it pours very light brown, almost copper, taste and aroma are very off.

A nice dark amber beer that produced a nice thick head. The malt really comes through on the nose. The flavour is much the same with a malty caramel flavour an a hint of chocolate. You get a slight hoppy bitterness in the end that kind of lingers.

I wouldn't expect "Red Pig" to be a brown ale; it doesn't look like it either. The company doesn't describe it or ever label it as a Brown ale of any kind, though, and it's listed as an amber elsewhere. That makes more sense, as this beer is exactly the bright, deep red copper the brewery advertises it to be. The head is between average and good in every way: height, retention and strength of lacing.
I wouldn't say it displays the "pleasant high bitterness" I've seen described by more mainstream sources, but it does have a bit of a floral nose to even out the pale and caramel malts that give off a mix of toast and sweetness. On the tongue, it falls a little flat, though it drops a bit of ash found in the edge of a dry, herbal note found in the aroma. It's an interesting take on any style for sure.
The feel doesn't have the depth or even the medium-bodied heft it needs to stand out, just an even modicum of crisp and smooth that just keeps it moving.

A: The pour is clear copper with a small compact off-white head. Decent lacings.

S: Lots of dark roasted malts, sweet. Kind of tart - like that tart you get in a Doppelbock. Flowery.

T: Very sweet, candy-like. Almost no malty sweetness, only sugar. Kind of harsh bitterness. Artificial.

M: Long bitter aftertaste. Sticky medium body and rich carbonation.

O: Well, this was a very artificial beer with extra sugar.

330ml bottle from Lupe Pinto, Glasgow (£1.49):
Clear, light brown with a thin, foamy white head on top that is about a quarter centimetre tall and stays consistent.

Sweet malts and a light, sweet floral aroma with some caramel on top. Not very strong and quite basic but not a bad smell either.

Hop filled aroma with some floral notes and a touch of caramel from the nose, this is followed by some toasted biscuits and very light, sweet fruit flavours.

Thin and light smelling beer but an easy one to drink, there is a sweet, dry finish and carbonation is medium throughout.

Not a bad beer really, just not a great one either or all that exciting. There is a nice caramel aroma and this is present in the taste but other than that the beer is just a little bland and doesn't have enough going for it to make you want to try it again.

A- Pours a clear coppery color with an expected large quantity of carbonation rising rapidly. The head is impressive, starting out about two fingers thick and it retains very well, settling to a dense layer of cloudy foam. Not as impressive is the lacing, which doesn't cling as much as I first thought it would, but there is a patchwork of small foam clusters sticking to my glass.

S- The aroma isn't very empowering, but what there is, is quite rich actually, with roasted malt and some floral hop present on the finish. It's just a little weak overall....kind of watery smelling.

T- There is more of the same here, with sweet, yet nutty malt qualities noticed. The finish does contain some of the aforementioned floral notes, but this does give way to a more Earthy leafy bitterness. Note....upon drinking this later in the review with some food, the bitter hop finish becomes a lot more distinct, cutting through some powerful herb crusted chicken dish!

M- This has a relatively thin body, but with that comes a refreshingly clean, yet flavorful nature. The carbonation isn't overdone either, giving this a creamier mouthfeel than I initially expected.

O- A respectable ale produced in a region that isn't known for having a great selection of style. It's a much more toned down version of an English Bitter, but is a good attempt at it. I would pick this up again in the future and don't feel this beer would offend the majority of palates.

Poured into a standard pint glass. The beer is a clear copper color with a frothy white head. The head dissipates to a film eventually with sticky lacing. The beer smells uneventful, maybe faint malts. The beer also tastes uninspired with not a lot coming through except a bitter hop presence and maybe faint caramel and toffee. The mouthfeel is light bodied with a dry hop finish.

Overall, for a Mexican beer, this is fairly easy drinking, but at best it's an average red ale.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. About ¾ inches of head. Color was dark amber. Light lacing on the top. There was some slight film on the sides as well, that stayed on throughout, moving uneven at the end.

Malty smell with odors of coffee, caramel and chocolate.

Initial taste was coffee and dark malts. Then followed with some chocolate sweets. Could taste some slight hops in there as well.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Good drinkability. Smooth with just a slight bitter ending.

I was pleasantly surprised with this beer. I wouldn’t hesitate to have one again if I could find it somewhere.

Clear amber-brown in color, head is the same off white as most Mexican 'oscura' beers. Nose is similarly typical, with mild spicing and a floral yeast bouquet. Malts are pale and lightly toasted, like wheat bread on toaster setting 1. Higher level of spicing kicks it up one half point.

The flavor is a big uplift in my opinion. This is actually a brown ale, rather than the insipid version of a Vienna lager usually found here. Grains are strongly present, more like rye bread in their spiciness. Pale malt is there too, with hints of buttery diacetyl as well. Hops are in low quantities, but add a touch of pine resin to the finish, slightly herbal and vinous as well.

Finishes pretty long and hoppy, with a bitterness that reminds me of Nelson Sauvin hops. I highly doubt they were used, but the buttery herbal grape note is there. Body is light for a brown ale, but the nuttiness is there to almost qualify. However, due to the higher hopping and red color I might more accurately throw this in the American Amber. Pretty damn good Mexican ale.

330ml bottle. Not a lot of Mexican ales to be found way the hell up here.

This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber hue, with two fingers of weakly puffy, fizzy, and loosely foamy off-white head, which leaves a nice 'missed a spot' wall of thin painted lace around the glass as it genially settles.

It smells of toasted and caramelized grain, wet ash, subtle bitter coffee, and peppy floral, earthy hops. The taste is more weirdly edgy and musty toasted biscuit and caramel malt, gritty brown sugar, pithy oily nuts, a mildly stale and indistinct citrus fruitiness, and equally underwhelming herbal weedy hops, the kind more drying than flavourful.

The carbonation is fairly soft, barely a tic of frothiness perceptible, the body medium-light in weight, a wee bit cloying, and yet adequately smooth. It finishes off-dry, still pretty sweet from the softened roasted caramel, with little in the way of alcohol or lingering hop offset.

Overall, this is a drinkable enough amber ale, though as it is teetering on the side of balance and good sense, that dusty malt would become tiresome after a few rounds, of that I am certain. Still, one of the better ales that I have yet come across around here from south of south of the border.

Thanks to Kristina for this one - apparently I'm the disposal unit for beers her store rejects. Served in a Russian River tulip.

A - Quick-dissolving white foam that settles to a thin collar and haze on top, with some spotty lace. Dark golden transparent body. I don't think this is a "brown ale".

S - Cloying, rotten fruits, toasted grains, butter. Not good - reminds me more of an adjunct lager - but not downright terrible either.

T - Taste is pretty bland actually. There's some pilsner malt and cereal grains, and a bit of toffee and biscuit. It's a little too sweet, but not awful as an amber lager.

M - Carbonation is medium and surprisingly pleasant. Sticky medium-light body, and mouth-coating saccharine residuals.

D - Pretty mediocre. I'd avoid this, unless you were in Mexico and couldn't find anything better out there. It's just too sweet to be enjoyable and doesn't have much going on flavor-wise beyond that.

This one is worth a try.

Very nice hazy brown-red appearance come through the pint glass while a very piney herbal smell emanates from the quickly receding head.

Flavor: coffe herbal mix that shows a very nice alcohol while at last it leaves a fruity end.

Medium body with good drinkability.

I will come back to this one.

Well, I guess I'm weird or something, but I really like this one. As the bottle says, it's a "mexican ale" so comparing it to american amber/brown ales is apples and oranges. My dad brought me back some Mexican microbrews (can you believe theres such a thing?) and this beer has a lot of the characteristics I've noticed in them, but a lot better. Thinner body and sweet caramel flavors. It's like negra modelo, but better!

P.S. The cucapa barleywine is overrated, very cloying.

A: An opaque amber color with moderate carbonation, a head with pale color but with a defined layer that remains all the time.

S: A faint toasted aroma with some sweetness not very complex.

T: Same toasted feeling and sweetness with some hops in the back.

M: Refreshing sensation with a balanced bittersweet that turns a little more bitter that sweet at the end.

The beer is clear light amber, a slightly off-white head that recedes slowly but leaves little lacing.

The smell is mostly sweet malts, candid sugar, sweet shortbread, molasses. A hint of yeast.

The taste is also rather sweet, but also a distinct but maybe uneven bitterness. A spicy note.

Medium carbonation, a dry feeling. Rather warming.

Can't really pinpoint it, but both sweet and bitter in an unbalanced way.

Served in a Chicago Bears shaker pint glass.

Pours not quite a brown, but more a clear rusted copper with a trickle of a white sudsy head that leaves a nice halo of head behind. The nose is faint, composed of toffee, caramel, and wheat. The taste waters down the aforementioned elements and adds a blunt hint of bland spice, leaving a strange, generally objectionable flavor. The body is decidedly moderate, with a good amount of carbonation and a very dry finish. Overall, the dryness of the finish and the objectionable taste drive the drinkability down from just above average do a ways below the par bar.

Very dark amber colored beer. I can see how this could be called a brown ale by the look of it. Deep clear amber ale with a small white head.

Smells sweet and malty with a distinct chocolate cake batter aroma. Little bit of strong tea and grass in this but that pretty much wraps up the smell.

Starts out malty with strong toasted malt flavor. Pretty much tastes like toasted wheat bread. Slight bitter hop bite but really kind of mild.

Good mouthfeel.

Far better than your average Mexican beer. This has actual flavor. To slight bitter note would work well in taming the burn of hot peppers.

Appearance: Pours a clear, mahogany-hued body with a thin, whitish head.

Smell: Some mildly spicy, floral tones set against some simple, standard pale malts and their modest notes of caramel and grains.

Taste: Pale malts with a smallish amount of graininess and a thinned out caramel sweetness. Hint of apple fruitiness. Seemingly spicy, floral, earthy hops though with only a medium-low amount of bitterness. Teeny taste of pepper on the bittersweet finish.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium-low carbonation.

Drinkability: Well, it certainly slaps the sombrero off most of the other Mexican beers I've had. I'd imagine it would pair well with the Pollo Supremo at the nearby Los Reyes Mexican restaurant. Can't we bump Sol off the beer menu and replace it with this? I feel the user who entered this as an American Brown Ale was entirely negligent in their duties by doing so. I'd say it'd be more at home within the American Amber / Red Ale, though admittedly, it is on the lighter end of that spectrum.

This 5%abv. ale comes in a slim 330ml brown bottle, filtered and possibly pasteurised; BB 13/08/2009, served cool in a straight pint glass.

A: pours a dark amber hue with random reddish glows, very clear and medium-level fizzy, topped with a thin layer of off-white foamy head that manages to last well.
S: sweet, simplistic, with a lightly acidic citric fruitiness from the hops interacting with the caramely sweet malts and maybe crystal malts; in a sense, the aroma rings a bell of a fruity-malty English bitter. A swirl brings out a touch of sour nuts, berries, and unexpected graininess as of lager malts.
T: the effervescent (semi-sharp) swallow of abundant caramely and brown-grainy malts is followed closely by a light tinge of citric-flavoured and toasted apple fruitiness as well as sweet-tea-ish hoppiness... The quite pleasant yet light aftertaste lingers as of herbal bitter-sweetness being intertwined with semi-nutty malts, always laced with an underlying flow of hop bitterness that lends a decent depth. Finishing with some skill and a delicate touch.
M&D: the texture is simply too fizzy for my taste, but not to the point of being intolerable, while the body remains moderate and not quite thin. All in all, this amber malty ale is the most drinkable when it reaches the aftertaste, where malts, hops and fruits all have a fair chance to chime in. Still, the lack of a smoother body, highlight in the flavour profile and a fresher palate makes this ale less enjoyable then otherwise.

Single from New Beer maybe a month ago. Less then $2 I think. Shelf was pretty stacked, so it couldn't of been too ripe.

Rinsed Ommegang Anniversary glass. Some broiled ribs in my belly to set the mood.

Pours a dark filtered copper with tons of activity. Flimsy off-tan/white head.

Smell is breakfast cereal grains, newspaper, & eager toffee.

Taste is charred. Some burnt caramel, a touch of coffee, a bit of tea, more then enough metallic & earthy bitters. Unexpectedly bitter. Bark-y even. Grain comes through a bit easier towards the finish. Thinking there's some oxidation in here isn't being overly assumptive. Overly toasted malt with a good bite. Tastes like a hoppy red or Vienna. Not a brown.

Feel is a touch sharp. Excellent carbonation. Some weight on the body as expected.

The hops are too steel-y, but otherwise, a nicely bitter beer.

Pours a pinkish brown colour with decent off-white head, not very thick, retains reasonably well, but remains quite thin. Lacing is speckled and pretty good. Decent-looking beer.

Nose is quite sweet and sticky with a molasses aroma and an almost raspberry kind of fragrance, quite light and fruity actually, mostly sweet but definitely a refreshing kind of character. Not very complex or pungent, but good.

Taste is a lot heavier, with a lot of hop coming through on that, taste has aspects of honey, puffed rice and treacle, hops are quite prevalent though with a grassy, floral flavour, quite inoffensive and really quite cleansing. They don't suffocate, anyway. Mouthfeel is full and nice, totally appropriate for the flavour. Just a bit funky for me to drink all the time; taste is just a bit 'off'.

Pours a very nice golden amber colour with a pretty decent head of white foam, which leaves some good lacing. Minimal carbonation, but it looks a very decent ale.

A light corny sweetness on the nose, unfortunately quite unpleasant. Lots of grain notes, but the corn sweetness takes over leaving it very generic. no hops, no complexity. Very dull indeed.

Very similar on the palate. The corn sweetness is pronounced, although there is a light coppery bitterness on the very back. Mostly, it's sickly and corny - full of adjuncts and, unnaturally for beer, very sweet. Mouthfeel is particularly thin - it just adds to the weak, unpleasant characters of the beer overall.

This is very thin, and not very pleasant. Compared to the other Mexican beers I've tried, it is a notch above, but that's not saying much. It only happens to be drinkable by default.

Yes, this is one of the better mexican beers I have had. Pours a good red color, and tastes very good. Iwould be willing to put it up there with Negra Modelo or Bohemia as one of my top mexican beers. I have never been horribly dissapointed with mexican beers, and this one was a very good find. Bravo.

Suprise! As part of my goal to drink the worlds best and the worlds worst, I picked up this one expecting it to fall into the latter category. This "disappointed" me. It was very good.
Appearance: The beer is an amber orange, with a 2" white head that disappears quickly, but leaves some significant lacing.
Smell: Biscuity Malt, with some caramel.
Taste: some grain, caramel malt,
Mouthfeel: Limited carbonation, somewhat slick.
Drinkability: I think I'll buy another!
