Aug. 2008: Cask at the GBBF 2008. Black colour, reddish brown in the highlights, moderate creamy head. Moderate roasty aroma with a certain fruitiness, notes of woodwork too. The flavour is also moderately roasty with a slight fruitiness. "Dusty" finish.

Bomber from brewery. Dark, near black pour, small bubbly head, then flat. Aroma is roasty malts, light smoke. Taste is mildly bitter and roasty. Feel is about right, not too thin. Light chocolate, burnt toast.

Clear black cherry with pitted sandy head.
Big carob nose with some tea leaf, earth, and raisin.
Malted milk balls, soil, Concord grape skins, some roasty sourness and then blackberry branch hops.
Kola nut finish and mild minty linger.
Lt-med, fizzy, round.
Cocoa is bigger on the nose than the palate. A touch too fizzy and too tight in the finish. But hard to fault at beer at such a sessionable strength.
Lean and light mild.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass.
Pours a dark brown colour, with a decent head.
Smells deeply of chocolate, quite pleasant.
Tastes as you'd imagine a mild to taste - mild, a bit malty and a bitter finish from hops.
Overall quite good.

Brown 500ml bottle obtained in a mixed pack from the brewery, original review lost on site.
Wasn't overly impressed with this beer from start to finish; a great pity because I love the set-up and brewery tap they have.
I visit the brewery annually (if possible), so I'll try and pick up another bottle or two of this and re-review next year.

Coming in a 500ml brown bottle, filtered. BB 07/2009, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass. Beer label: Brewed by the largest Brewery in England's smallest County; containing a blend of Pale Ale and Chocolate Malted Barley, with Northdown and Fuggles hops.
A: pours a dark brown colour topped with a tan-hued fluffy head with surprisingly good retention, added with sporadic, mild fizziness.
S: a dark-sugary and caramely main theme laced by sweet citric fruitiness and chocolatey malts - pretty intense on the malty aroma and sweet side, but not OTT.
T: roasted malts seems to overtake the foretaste of caramely malts and turns immediately bitter, closely ensued by a lengthy, deepening chewy bitterness of aromatic Fuggles hops and burned sugar, as well as a delightfully nutty and milder black-date-like aftertaste. Dry-ish and increasingly herbally bitter in the finish, while the chocolatey aroma also lingers to offer some kind of balance overall.
M&D: the palate comes slightly too fizzy for my palate, supposedly due to added fizz in the bottle; that aside, this light-bodied dark mild tastes fulsome and remarkably bitter, attributable to, I think, a good dose of hops in the brew. Absolutely delicious and quaffble! Just like my previous encounter with the cask version, this dark ale punches above its weight, drinks very much like a medium-bodied English stout, if taking away the sugary part IMO.

On cask at this little pub on Christchurch street whose name escapes me. Hand pumped into a pint glass.
Deep brown, almost black (my mates thought it was), poor retention.
Herbal, roasted malt notes; grassy hops. Caramelish maltiness.
Chocolate, herbs, smooth mouthfeel and incredibly easy drinking. Roasted character. The first real ale I've had since arriving in the UK and I am not disappointed.
