Berliner Weisse: Cranberry-QuinceBerliner Weisse: Cranberry-Quince
Notes: Influential beer author the late Michael Jackson describes “Berlin White Beer” as having an “insistent sparkle, a fragrant fruitiness in the nose, a sharp, dry palate, and a frisson of quenching, sour acidity in the finish.” The third offering in our spontaneously soured seasonal Berliner Weisse series, North Coast Brewing Cranberry-Quince Berliner Weisse is made with the juice of Oregon cranberries and the pear-like quince—the perfect accompaniment for all your autumn celebrations!

Poured from a bottle. Reddish orange in color with a good sized head. Smells of earth and fruit. Flavors include fruit, and both a hint of sweetness and tartness. Refreshing and good flavor.

*Poured into a Teku glass from a 12oz bottle*

Poured a orangish-pink color and had a nice two finger thick white colored head. Had a good diversity of rocky and micro bubbles with a nice retention to it.

I was worried that from the clear bottle that this beer was skunked--thankfully, I got none of that. Despite this, the aroma was pretty straightforward and unsurprising. Primarily got... cranberry and quince, with a slight malty sweetness and breadiness. Kinda boring, but I got what I paid for.

As expected, the taste followed the nose, striking a nice balance between the tartness of the cranberry and sourness from the quince. Although I didn't get much malt from the taste, the two flavor profiles from the cranberry and quince developed into a slightly overripe apple character giving me the impression that I was drinking apple juice mixed with cranberry juice. The alcohol was not noticeable at all, and was hidden very well.

I felt like this beer was pretty light bodied as expected, which made this super easy to drink and maybe even chug for some people. I was worried that this would just be like drinking straight up juice, I was surprised to find that it had a decent amount of carbonation in it.

Overall, this was a very drinkable and straight-forward beer. It was inoffensive, but admittedly kind of boring and generic. I wouldn't mind drinking this again, but I probably wouldn't try to seek it out.

12 fl oz clear glass BOTTLE ran me $1.99 USD on-sale at a Total Wine & More in Austin, TX.

"Berliner weisse."

The cranberry comes through, and it's obviously sweetened. Tart, acidic, and approachably sour in classic Berliner weisse fashion. I can't say I know what quince tastes like, but I do get a note close to pear that's fruity.

2-row and maybe even some Munich malt lends this its simple backbone. No overt hop flavours emerge.

A balanced and refreshing stab at a Berliner weisse that nevertheless fails to measure up to other American brewed fruited variants (Anderson Valley's in particular). Well worth trying once, but its price will keep me away from it in terms of regular buys.

Beer with a pinkish Hue but when held to the light is Amber. Slightly cloudy. Off-white head that's a bit foamy and dense. Sweet cranberry base to the aroma. With a mixed fruit presentation. Slightly tart and very pleasant. Cranberry taste but more mixed fruit. Tart that is not too much. Has a thirst quenching quality. Finish is pretty short. Ample bubbles bring in a soda like quality but it's short lived.
Nice and light. Refreshing.

12oz bottle Poured out a clear, pinkish color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of cranberry and (I guess) quince. It was tart and sweet with a good dose of cranberry and a touch of tartness.

Poured into a stange, the appearance was a glossy golden amber color with a slight foamy white head to soften quickly with barely any lace.
The aroma had a nice blend of sweet to tart cranberries up front to back up a sly sweet to sour wheaty base. Touch of lemon.
The flavor moderately leans towards the sour side but has a keen sweet and tart character to it. Cranberry forward sweet and tart aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Some tart distractibility seems to make a playful grip on my tongue. Carbonation felt fine, somewhat low. ABV felt fine. Smooth tart to sweet finish.
Overall, very nice beer taking the cranberry qualities to play with the Berliner weisse qualities.

Poured from a bomber into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Clear light golden pink pour. Massive foamy white head. Lasts approximately forever with solid lacing.

S: Tart cranberries and fruit. Light lemon/citrus.

T/F: Sweet/tart combination... balanced and pleasant. Cranberry definitely present and quince as well. Light lemon and acidity. Minimal funk. Overcarbonated... fizzy. Light and otherwise drinkable.

O: A delicious sweet/tart Berliner Weiss, and the only flaw to me is the overcarbonation. Great flavor and drinkability, and a really nice beer.

Poured from a bomber bottle into a snifter.

L - Medium gold color with some orange and even pink highlights. Perfectly clear. Active, persistent head made up of tiny, swirling, pure white bubbles. Beautiful appearance.

S - The aroma is unexpected for such a light, effervescent looking beer. There is a faint fruity note followed by an herbal, earthy base aroma. Even a hint of smoke. No obvious hops, yeast or microflora aroma characters. Very unusual, but interesting and pleasant.

T - The flavor starts with light sour notes, with an acidity similar to unsweetened lemonade. This is followed by a berry note and then a light herbal note similar to the aroma. In the aftertaste is the smokiness from the aroma. Despite the odd descriptors I'm using, the overall impression is light, pleasant and drinkable.

F - Thin body. Spritzy carbonation adds to the feeling of lightness. Hops bitterness is low but blends with the acidity to give an overall light burn. No alcohol presence.

O - This is a great beer; subtle and refreshing as you'd expect from the style. Although the cranberry and quince don't stand out in an identifiable way, they add add interesting notes that make the beer distinctive.

A: Lots of cranberry, followed by light quince with a light tartness.

A: Copper color, clear, with a thin white head that quickly recedes into the glass.

T: Cranberry, pear flavors followed by a moderately light tartness that lingers.

M: Medium-light bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Solid; the beer has an interesting tartness, though the bready malts, could be a little more prominent to provide better balance.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/14/2017. Pours crystal clear pinkish orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of sour/tart/tangy cranberries, fruit skin, lemon, lime, peach, pear, red/green apple, red grape, wheat, cracker, white bread, herbal, grass, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, fruits, and moderate pale malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big sour/tart/tangy cranberries, fruit skin, lemon, lime, peach, pear, red/green apple, red grape, wheat, cracker, white bread, herbal, grass, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness, fruit tang, and light herbal/grassy/spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of sour/tart/tangy cranberries, fruit skin, lemon, lime, peach, pear, red/green apple, red grape, wheat, cracker, white bread, herbal, grass, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, fruits, and moderate pale malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tart/sourness balance, and zero puckering flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Moderate increasing dryness from tart/sourness, tangy fruit, and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth and moderately grainy/acidic/tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.1%. Overall this is a delicious fruited Berliner weisse! All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, fruits, and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink; with the modestly lactic/tangy/tannic/drying finish. Really impressive balance of classic Berliner style flavors and authentic fruits; nice level of lactic acid, without being overpowering. A very enjoyable offering.

i havent seen a craft beer in a clear bottle for awhile, and with the art on this, i almost thought it was a cider, but im glad i picked it up, this is festive and pretty good. as a berliner, i think its a little boring, tart and acidic, but not real wheaty or malty at all, and the frothiness and textural richness i like in the best examples of the style is almost totally absent. that said, there are some unique features to this one from the fruit added, and it comes together really well, to such an extent even that non beer drinkers might find this enjoyable. it has a nose and an initial taste of rose wine, mineraly and tannic, acidic but not super sour if that makes sense, very vinous, this must be a primary contribution of the cranberry. it doesnt taste a ton like cranberries, more of a tart red fruitiness and even a grapey character before fresh cranberry to me, i get the citrus though, and its perfect with the tang here. i wish this had more body and bubbles, it feels sort of like a glass of rose too, but overall i think its a super unique beer and a tasty one. all around the table enjoyed it, light and easy going, and i think appropriate for the holidays! looks like they have a few other clear bottle flavored berliners, which i will be seeking out now. really fairly priced too!

Pours a rosé with a champagne-like head that falls quickly to a thin ring. Clear and pinkish orange.

Nose has a hint of spontaneous funk to a lightly sour, almost fruity sweet-tart scent. I get a little sour fleshy apple specifically along with a light grain (wheat, presumably) scent.

Taste initially comes more as sour fruit, with a light pear-apple sweet aspect I wasn’t expecting. Cranberry is more noticeable in back, and a minute cheesy tang comes with warmth. Light, clean, early fizziness that dulls by mid-glass.

An enjoyable fruit beer with a moderate to light sourness. Enjoyable and easy drinking non-traditional take.

Poured from 22oz clear-glass bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: light salmon pink, very much like a sparkling rosé. Head is a thick finger of frothy white foam with decent retention. Maybe not a traditional beer look, but I like it.

Smell: light and refreshing with wheaty notes and a light fruitiness; if a rosé could be a beer, this would be it.

Taste: delightfully fruity with a tart, sweetish base. A nice, wheaty malt character comes through, as does the cranberry which works very well indeed. A refreshing, interesting treat!

Mouthfeel: light body with a big carbonation and a fizzy, even somewhat creamy body. Just what it should be.

Overall: this beer gets a lot of points for being weird, in addition to being successful, even if it's not particularly traditional. Absolutely worth a try.

Appearance - Pours clear and deep salmon in color with a white, finger width head that fizzes away quickly like soda, leaving a barren surface with a champagne-like stream of bubbles No lacing.

Smell - Cranberry and tartness.

Taste - Follows the nose. Sweet, slightly bitter cranberry flavor mixed with tartness that hits that 'stomach acid' range. Not much outside that.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with light, slightly bitey carbonation. Slick drinker with a dry, acidic finish.

Overall - Simple flavor profile that has a slightly vomit-y taste to it, just in terms of the range that acidity hits with. Hard to look past that and so I'll drink what's left and shan't look back.

Pretty pink color with lots of cranberry flavor and a decent amount of tartness but it's actually too sweet overall, I assume from the quince. If the tartness/sweetness were more balanced it could be a lot better.
