Appearance: Pours a very hazy ice tea color with garnet highlights; the head is magnificent, sticks well and leaves a nice pattern of lace behind

Smell: Unusual aroma for a brown ale; very earthy, with hints of cherry licorice

Taste: Like the aroma, this is very unusual as the bready brown ale flavors are overwhelmed by a combination of earthy and fruity hops, with chocolate and slightly sour elements complementing the profile; after the swallow, it settles down to more of what one would expect from a brown, with the sweet cherry licorice adding a bit of a different element, but the lingering bitter and sour flavors never fade from the scene

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: Not what I was expecting at all, and I still don't quite know what to make of it; it is an interesting blend of styles, quite unique, but I cannot say that it is something to which I would return

Thanks, riversideAK (from the other site), for the opportunity

Poured a dark, brown-amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma was initially a sour malt, but some sweetness came into play. Taste was very mellow, sweet malt and brown sugar. Texture was chewy, but not very heavy, a very good mouthfeel. Beer is excellent, not a session beer I feel that it a little on the sweet side.

I was served a pint glass from a keg at a blues and brews festival held in Mineral, Washington. Iron Horse was one of two breweries present (a third was scheduled to attend but was a no show).

A: It poured a clear brownish amber with a dominant cherry hue and a half finger off white head. The head broke down quickly leaving a scattering of bubbles on the top of the brew and very little lacing.

S: It has a light chocolate malt aroma complemented by floral hops.

T: It lead off with light chocaloate malts and a bit of caramel flavor. There were grassy hop flavors that came through as I drank the brew but they were well balanced by the malts.

M: Light to medium bodied with a refreshing balance of bitter hops and zesty carbonation. Very fresh non-intrusive aftertaste.

Comment: I was pleasantly surprised. The brewer hit the mark and made a beer that I will enjoy when I am able to find it.

I bought a couple of bottles of Iron Horse Brown Ale while traveling in central Washington. Poured in to a pint tumbler.

Pours a deep dark black walnut color, with red hues, and appears to be fairly clear. Not head on this one, and very little fizz. No lacing to speak of.

The smell is good, with some sweet malted grain aromas and a little smoky molasses scent.

The taste iis also quite good, a sweet smokey flavor, molasses maybe some honey, a deep roasted grain taste, and a litle bitter charcoal finish.

Mouthfeel is a bit flat. Smooth however, just not much carbonation, and I think it would be better with a little zest.

Drinkability is OK. Not the most drinkable brown ale I've ever had, but it's certainly worth a try. Not available in my area, so I doubt I'll have this one again.

Deep borscht red with low CO2, and no head or lace. A luscious plum smell guides the way towards a beer of fluid sweetness. There’s also an agreeable measure of diacetyl butterscotch. No nuts or chocolate in this brown ale. Just remote bittering and casual appreciation.

From a bottle purchased at the brewery in Ellensburg, WA. All there beers are stored in refigeration, which I appreciate, and you can get a mixed case for about $24. The owner is a great guy, plus he's got a small homebrew shop up front supporting the locals.

A deep copper beer to light brown ale with a nice white head that fades over time. Medium roasted aroma with high esters. Nice malt-toast-malt flavor with a medium body. Medium to low hop flavor. Like many Iron Horse beers this leans towards the English tradition of well made, moderate alcohol beers.

On tap at McGlinn's Public House.

Appearance: deep brown color with a 2" head that lasts a long time. Mild lacing develops during the session.

Smell: wonderful nuttiness and roasted malts.

Taste: the nut flavor picked up by the nose is amplified on the tongue. Roasted malt, bit of dark chocolate, and a dash of pepper spiciness make up the main flavor components. The bitterness is mild but works well here.

Mouthfeel: super smooth. Heavier in body than most other brown ales. Aftertaste is short with the roasted nut tones.

Drinkability: superb is all that can be said. A very enjoyable brown ale that must be had if you see it on tap.

This beer takes a minute to open up let the fullness of the malt shine through. I thought at first it tasted alittle thin but after further reflection I noticed the complexity and great finish. Bigger and bolder than an English Brown this is great with BBQ and burgers.
