The death series continues with this chocolate and hazelnut flavor infused variation of our classic dark, smooth brew. Orange peel rounds out this beer to add to the complexity of this flavor bomb.

This beer pours a dark brown/black in color with a creamy tan head. The aroma is bitter chocolate and hazelnut. Taste is mild chocolate and hazelnut and overly roasted/burnt malt. It has a bitter finish which on a dessert beer, I'm not a fan, Rogue's version is much better. Rated 2-2024

Canned 3/22/23

I’m a sucker for hazelnut in beer, but usijg just a generic Strong Ale as a base for the adjunct instead of the typical Stout has me intrigued. Hopefully this acts as a more neutral platform for the hazelnut, but I guess there’s only one way to find out

Pours a cloudy medium brown with 3 fingers of frothy dark tan head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing

The hazelnut is definitely front and center here, with minor supporting notes. I’m picking up on aromas of toasted hazelnut, milk chocolate, dark bread, raisin, orange zest, light earthy jops, and drip coffee

It’s pretty much more of the same in taste, and I’m perfectly fine with that. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting milk chocolate, toasted hazelnut, dark toast, light roast coffee, toffee, light vanilla, and raisin. The swallow brings notes of toasted hazelnut, milk chocolate, dark toast, caramel, orange zest, brown sugar, and light roast coffee

A medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a creamy beer. Finishes surprisingly dry with a nice roastiness

This is tasty stuff. It’s not wildly complex or anything, but I dig it

Very dark brown with slighter edges, full tan head. Hazelnut and coffee lead the nose with dark chocolate in the background. Taste starts with roasted malt with hazelnut wafer, then a touch of vanilla and big bakers chocolate rounding out. Simpler and little depth, but flavors are pleasant. Feel is lighter and not boozy at all for the style, smooth and hihgly drinkable with a good amount of roast to anchor

Taster in Meridian; dark body shows light through the brown liquid, minimal head. Lots of chocolatey sweetness and nutty/peanut/hazelnut character; strongly prefer this hazelnut flavor and aroma to Hazelnut KBS. Roasty as well, with some nice coffee/mocha flavor. Solid offering, decadent but not overwhelmingly sweet.

yet another flavor of this iconic classic, this time hazelnut and chocolate, good flavor here, they work well together of course, its not overdone, not fake or cheap either to me, i quite like it. its cool that the roast and coffee notes of the base beer remain, its so deeply and uniquely malty, i could pick this out of a crowd of dozens of similar beers, which i guess is to say that there really isnt anything all that similar. im into the natural hazelnut, slightly sweet, earthy, an almond note to it here, and the darker side of the chocolate profile loves it, adult flavors here, not like candy. its slightly slick and oily to me too, maybe from the nuts, suggesting they used the real thing. it remains kind of bitter from the roast which i like with the sweeter side of the chocolate, both marry into the base super well. the body is fluffy and this always drinks a lot lighter than it looks, no matter what edition it is. this is clever, dosed just right, and with the hazelnut ahead of the chocolate but not by much. so different than the huge imperial stouts and porters that usually get this kind of treatment, im into it. this one would also lend itself well to a whiskey barrel. trace smoke as it warms adding depth too. nice. good to see some innovation from these guys, things have been a little slow in that department of late it seems. really enjoyed this.

edit: less good this year to me, more of a powdered generic nuttiness than hazelnut specifically, a tad almost cheapened, but still good, just not as good as i remember it, could be draft versus package, could be a recipe tweak, could be freshness, so leaving scores as they are for now...
