The holy mountian of northern Bavaria. I had heard of this place before. The first time that I went was in the late 1980's I was on a six man LRRP patrol and we set up near the place. One guy watched the weapons and Equipment and the rest of us got hammed. Ah the old days. Been there a few times since. I like this place more than Andechs. A must stop!

I was here a few times when I was stationed in Germany. The place is near Wildflecken training area. The best beer I've ever had. The gold standard. The place is special.

There is something to be said for drinking German beer, brewed by German Franciscan monks, on the top of a mountain. In nature, with snow surrounding you and the smell of gluhwein and brats in the air, you just haven't lived until you have experienced it. It was crowded by hundreds of people even in late Novemeber and that really says soemthing about the Kloster and the brewery's appeal. Below freezing temps can't keep 'em away.

The Christmas Markt was a festive time to visit and it added to the natural joy and peace that is usual for a visit to a monastery. The brothers were happy to wander around engaging visitors in conversations, wearing their brown robes, sporting scarves or hats to fend off the cold.

Was hoping for more than just the Dunkel to try (their site boasts 4 styles including a Christmas brew) but was slightly disappointed. No bottles to buy either...only growlers. And they are expensive but unique.

They rent rooms for very reasonable rates. If you want some relaxation and spiritual renewal the old fashioned way, with log fireplaces, friendly monks and yummy brew, you must head on out to this place. Definitely worth the trip.
