Corps Mort ("dead bodies") actually looks very lively. Despite a foggy complexion (appropriate from a beer brewed on a small island in the north Atlantic ocean), vibrant and almost tropical orange highlights abound, while carbonation looks alive and well. A thin head develops even in spite of all that alcohol (11%). Nothing smoky about this...
Or wait. OK, maybe there is, but not as much as I anticipated. Speaking of expectations, before we go any further let me say this: I've tried beers made with a lot of strange things before but smoked herring seriously takes the cake. It can't possibly get more unique and bizarre than that and yet, to my relief, the aroma isn't noticeably or unpleasantly unusual, let alone fishy.
But the impression of smoked herring isn't entirely hard to imagine. Nor, for that matter, is the cold, wet, rocky, wind-swept shores of the north Atlantic. There's a distinctive 'sea spray' quality as well as hints of singed wood and campfire ashes. Fans of Islay scotches will feel right at home; this has a smooth, dry smokiness and distinct seaweed and iodine notes.
That said, there's none of the 'fire water' burn. Gooey-sweet pale malts and soft, honeyed stone fruit flavours ensure the alcohol doesn't become a real factor. This is exceptionally easy drinking (a year in the cellar might have helped), especially when you consider that balancing smoke and saltiness with sweetness is no easy task. It's very well brewed.
How does one score a smoked herring barleywine? Anyone revolted by the thought aught not be; this is a smooth, easily consumed barleywine (provided you're OK with a little smoke). It's worth saying again that Islay scotch lovers will fall in love with it. Myself, personally, I really enjoyed it too and found it much more than a mere novelty.

Purchased at a Montreal bottle shop for just under $4.00 for a 341ml bottle. Served at 4deg C in a tulip
A- Opens well and pours a tiny 1/4" head that is gone in a minute or two. Very dark gold colour and unfiltered
S- Malt and sweetness.
T- Sweet and malty. Soooo malty. Has a hot and spicy nose. Very young. Has some good base legs though. Not a big brew by any means. Just a nice sipper
M- Sticky and gooey. Not my thing
O- Nice to try but will not buy again. Don't much care for the barely wines but gave this one an honest collage kid try but to no avail.
Food Pairing
This ok brew went ok with....... BBQ sausages! Nice and crispy on the ends and just a treat. This sweet brew cut though all that too!
Enjoy

Flashback #271 - Has a smoky flavor to it, almost like smoked fish. Different but interesting.

Poured from a 341mL bottle into a snifter. Best before Sept. 22/2016, so I'm guessing this bottle is about 4 months old.
L - Lighter in colour than I expected - I'd say deep gold. One finger of off-white head that leaves behind a thin layer but no real lacing on the sides of the glass.
S - Smoke on the nose but very different from the smoke you'd find in a smoked porter or a rauchbier. This is a softer smoke. Very different and inviting. Some caramel and tobacco lurking there, too.
T - The label says smoked herring (if I have translated correctly) and that is not too far off. It is not really fishy but I think that the light saltiness and the soft smoke imply smoked fish. Very little alcohol in the taste. Light bitterness to balance a little bit of sweetness - just right in my opinion.
F - Light body, low carbonation, and a dry finish.
O - A really different barley wine. I am glad that I picked this one up at Broue Ha Ha to bring back home with me.

330mL bottle
I never mention bitterness in my reviews, my bitterness taste buds are ridiculously under-
sensitive.
APPEARANCE : Clear copper-orange. Head is slightly off-white and rises fairly high but drops back down rather quickly. Good lacing.
SMELL : First nose is shy barley sugar with some hints of smoke. Second nose add some hops to the profile. Third nose really brings out the malt, with hops in the background, and behind that, a smoke aroma.
TASTE : Oh, well this is a surprise. The nose never let me think so many spices might be hiding in this brew - peppercorn, mostly. Pleasing malt presence. The smoke backs all this up beautifully. Impressive.
MOUTHFEEL : Although the malt is big a meaty, the hops make it all sharp and crisp. Carbonation is spot-on. Quite pleasing.
OVERALL : Very good brew, although a bit on the pricey side, even here in Montreal. I bought the last two bottles from a local store and even though, as I said, I did have to pay a surprising amount for them, I think they were still worth the expense. Much better and much more worth it than the other brew I've had from them.
