Half liter vom fass at the Winkler BräuWirt in Amberg, inside the walls of the Altstadt. Listed on the menu as “BräuWirt Zoiglbier”, so I’m assuming this is the same beer. I always drink a Zoigl when I see one because the Zoigl story/tradition in northern Bavaria is so interesting.
This is surprisingly dark and sweet. Closest classification would be Zwickl/Keller but it’s more unique/special. Rich amber color with a foamy head. Malty, caramelized aroma. Full-flavored, fairly sweet and roasty malt bill. Slightly barny but sweeter than expected. I don’t mind it but it was a bit surprising. That’s the beauty of this style/tradition. Each brewery can interpret it their own way and make it regional.
