Presentation: Sampled at the Red Shed, Wakefield during my Easter Trip back to the UK. After the very disappointing Arkell’s 3B from Pump #3 I needed something with a little more balls to get rid of the horrid after-taste left by the 3B.

Pump #1 had another new brew for me to try. A large oval Pumpclip has the words ‘Bowland Brewery’ in gold text against a dark blue background. The words ‘Pendle Porter’ are inside a dark red band that runs across the front of the clip, whilst a picture of the Pendle countryside sits below. Listed at 4.6% at the base of the Pumpclip. A new brew from Bowland, the story goes that this was originally a Porter brewed for a local Beer Festival.

Appearance: Dark brown muddy body with a light tan colored head. Firm head that looked impressive when it settled after the pull to a tight and creamy ¼” cap that lasted the distance.

Nose: Toasted malts, caramel and milk chocolate in the nose. Restrained aromas until it warms a little.

Taste: Has a soft feel, nutty malts with milk chocolate in the middle. Soft bitterness in the finish, creamy malts with a toasted smoked aspect which comes through after the swallow. Lots of malt in this one, a little too much at times, more bitterness would have helped.

Mouthfeel: High levels of dissolved carbon dioxide from the freshly tapped Cask help the creamy body, as indeed did the tight pull through the sparkler which assisted in supporting the smooth body throughout.

Drinkability: Nicely put together, lacks a little balance at times with a heavy malt feel, but it is a nice libation nonetheless.

Overall: A malty Porter. Worth trying.
