A rich malty ale made with six Kent-grown hops, this festive stuff delivers sleigh full of sweet caramel and roasted nut notes - and plenty of Christmas spirit too…

500ml bottle.
L: Slightly hazy, dark amber colour with a persistent, off-white head and some lacing.
S: Smells like a standard English bitter.
T: Malty and fruity and very dry.
F: Medium/light body with a smooth mouthfeel and just a spritz of carbonation.
O: Not what I think of as a Christmas Ale: no spices; not sufficiently rich. There’s plenty of malt but also an unexpected high level of bittering hops. It improves as it warms but I’m still disappointed. I was expecting a winter warmer rather than a 5% ESB.

L- Very deep chestnut brown, clear, with a fine pillowy 2Cm just off-white head that holds up well.
S- Malty notes otherwise subtle on the nose (to me).
T- A bit hoppier than expected on the front into a dryer than expected toasty finish. Overall it is quite a pungent/strong flavour.
F- The head is holding up well, and carbonation in the mouth is good too. This beer feels more like a well flavoured bitter than an ale to me.
O- I associate a 'Christmas beer' with something perhaps say 6-9% ABV, a richer puddingy beer you might enjoy sipping slowly with dessert. This isn't like that, due to the hoppy edge you could likely enjoy this in summer months too.
Bought from Fortnum & Mason London. BBE: Oct-19. £3.25/500ml.
