Cap City's El Gigante is well-balanced and very drinkable, if a bit basic. And although it might not exhibit all of the machisimo of a "left-coast" example, it's still a very decent example of the American barleywine style that shows some Pacific northwest hop character in both it's flavor and aroma.
It's served in a chunky 10 ounce goblet, unfiltered, with a murky brown body and short-lived but creamy off-white head. Gotta love freshness!
The nose is more restrained than many other examples, and the hops don't just leap out and hit you on the head. But they're there, gently citrusy amidst some yeasty dark fruit and a welcome amount of malty caramel.
It's quite nice in the mouth with a medium-full body and delicate carbonation that passes smoothly across the palate.
The flavor is exactly as the nose indicates, and it's not overly done at all, but just right with a perfect balance of malt and hop that leans more towards the British school than the American (although the domestic hops are clearly present).
Nicely done and quite enjoyable, don't miss this one next time around!
