Reviewed on 06/04/2009. Sampled from a growler at PPRBSG09. This beer pours a clear brown with a small head. It has an aroma of iced tea and some roasted malts. The flavor is very sweet and malty with a watery palate. Overall I just wasn't really a fan.

I've had a good double ipa from cap city before. Don't know why they changed the recipe...
It's a moderately big, unbalanced bitter beer with no malt backbone and nothing endearing to it's character. Color is good, aroma is uninspired. Taste is lacking. The beer is one-dimensional, at best. Not their best work. Still, it packs in the hops and alcohol.

It appears as a murky and bready brown colored body with a tan head. The first taste is rough, heavy on toast and bread flavors, and itÂ’s chewy and thick, with plum and walnut and bread crust. Very nutty and toasty, actually, and heavy on the palate, with some toasty and dry hops as well. The nose smells strongly of bread crust as well, with some alcohol and husky grains noticed as well, along with a rather large dose of a chewy, cherry flavored malty body. One of the best I have had at Capital City so far.

Cap City's Double D an Imperial Amber
Appearance: Pours dark amber with hues of red shining through. A tightly foamed white head tops the beer and dissipates rather quickly to a sheer lacing. Plenty of lacing lines the glass as well.
Smell: Malty sweet with caramel with big wafts of citrusy hops breaking through the caramel/brown sugar like sweetness.
Taste: Starts with the crystal malts dominating with plenty of residual sweetness reminicent of caramel, sweet potatoes, and brown sugar then BAM ! the hops hit right in the middle of the tongue with a grapefruity like bitterness. The finish is smooth but with plenty of hop character linger long on the tongue. Alcohol extremely well hidden for 8% abv though it will warm the face. Nicely balanced.
Mouthfeel: Medium and very smooth, nicely carbed and lively in the mouth. Has thirst quenching quality that I like.
Drinkability/Notes: The folks at Cap City have really been making some nice and interesting one-offs of late with Double D being the latest. A really dangerously easy to drink Imperial Amber. Plenty of crystal malts adds to the malty sweetness and color with the hops adding to a really nice citrusy bitterness that balances out the malts Cascade hop extract was added in secondary to give Double D and citrusty aroma as well a bit of bitterness in the finish (according to Mike McCarthy at Cap City). At 8% abv, this is not a session beer by any means but its so easy to drink its scary, the alchohol is so well hidden. Overall, a really good beer and one that I wish was brewed year round. Its great to see our local guys put out such quality beers. Highly recommended. Seek and enjoy while supplies last.
