Reviewed from notes taken while visiting Washington DC two weeks ago...sitting at the Capitol City Brewing Company bar on New York Ave NW...

A black abyss - virtually no head...

Heady mix of very roasted dark grains w/strong coffee/dark, ripe fruit notes...

Smooth, rich, coffee and burnt toast, weird (but good) chocolate mint (probably some strange combo coffee stout/high ABV flavor combo)...

Wow! A monster dark brew. Bold and assertive yet easy drinking for the style. Well-balanced, intriguing complexity. Find it!

From tap to 10oz goblet at Capitol City Alehouse in Shirlington on 6/15/12

-- Aged in Jack Daniel's barrels --

A: Nice and dark. Plenty black. The dark mocha head is a bit loose, and the retention and lacing aren't great. Decent creamy collar.

S: Lots of booze soaked wood. It says barrel aged, but I wouldn't be shocked if this was aged on JD soaked beans. But the nose is nice. Whiskey filled dark chocolate brownies and a touch of red cherry.

T: It's got that red fruit up front. There's some charred chocolate, heat, tannin and a leafiness on the mid to finish. Surprisingly tasty stuff.

M: it's a bit effervescent, yet as it warms, the viscosity improves. More of a medium body, but it's certainly a bit easier to drink then some in-style.

O: You can imagine my excitement to find a BA RIS on draft mid-June in Cap City of all places. This is a seriously above average stab at the style, and one I'd certainly drink again. Not as complex and involved as some, but clearly the best thing Cap City has produced. A solid tick, and an enjoyable glass of beer.
