Tried this today at the brewpub. Served in a standard pint glass.
Clean amber body is capped by a very small white head with poor retention and minimal lacing. Highly active carbonation.
Aroma is right on track for the style with crackery and caramel malts backed up by grassy bitter hops.
Bitter, grassy, and leafy hops dominate and seem almost harsh on the palate, especially on the aftertaste. There's a nice creamy character that goes well with the clean malt profile of this style.
Carbonation is very high on this beer which isn't a defect in this style but it seems a little distracting on this one. Along with the slightly strong hops for the style it brings the drinkability down a notch.
A nice beer but not a match for Anchor's standard bearer. I'm starting to think this must be a hard style to brew. I've had several decent versions from talented brewers but few great ones. Still, this one is good enough that I've ordered it on numerous visits to the brewpub.
