Comes in a stubby-necked half liter brown bottle with an elaborate yellow and green label featuring the imperial double-headed eagle encircled by the words "natural Russian dark beer." The name is printed on a banner below the eagle, while the neck label extols the high quality of the ingredients used. One of those ingredients is granulated sugar. Best before 9/12/05, I opened it on 5/15/05.
Pours a cloudy cola brown under a big bubbled tan head that couldn't even cover the full surface of the liquid before it faded away to the thinnest of collars. Syrupy caramel nose, with a touch of sour. The mouth is pretty flat and light as soda. The taste has its strengths: sweet caramel, some barley and a bit of sourdough. It also has its weaknesses: no hops, overly sour grapes. The finish is mainly sour, while a bit of the bread comes back in the aftertaste. I have no desire to try this again.
