Draft, at the Pratt Street Ales House, Baltimore poured into a goblet
Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, deep, dark mahogany color with an eighth of a finger of white-colored head that completely dissolved away into a thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass.
Aroma: Strong aromas of roasted malt, imparting notes of freshly baked dark bread, roasted peanuts, dark molasses and caramel and some subtle smoke.
Taste: Similar to the aroma, but with much more smoky roastiness. Almost too much. There’s roasted malt up front, imparting flavors of slightly burned dark bread, and roasted peanuts, followed by some caramel-like sweetness, and then a lot of smoke.
Mouthfeel: Medium, medium-thin and very smooth, as there is no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 2.7%, there is no alcohol on the palate.
Overall: I’m not sure what I was expecting from this beer, as it is described as being “moderately bittered with Kent Goldings, light bodied with a beautiful malt nose and hints of toffee from British brown & amber malts,” but all of the smoky, roasted malt wasn’t it! In fact, there’s almost too much smoke for my taste. Sorry Oliver, this one didn’t work for me.
