On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours a fairly dark amber color with good head retention and considerable lacing. On the nose, I get virtually nothing. Maybe there wsa a vague aroma of butterscotch and orange citrus, but it's pretty light. The beer is a bit better on the palate, but I still am not picking up a whole lot. I get some apple, light sweet malt, and maybe some dry cider. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, but what flavor there is, tends to fade pretty quickly on the finish. Drinkability is OK. The alcohol is not very discernable, and the beer isn't heavy or tiring on the palate. I just wish there was more to it.

I think "mehhhh" describes this beer pretty well.

a: shaker pint serving, deep nutty brown in color with a weakly foamy head

s: rich malt nose - heavy on the toffee and darker toasted/roasted notes, but at the same time even and well balanced, mild earthy hop aromas

m: very little carbonation here - not exactly unexpected, medium in body with a nice malty feel

t: solid scottish flavor - lots of nice caramelized malt character with some smoky/toasty complexity, dark fruit and brushes of chocolate, malt forward but not overly sweet, and a light bitter at the finish, satisfying

d: no problems with the pint, would go for this one again

A pint glass served at the Pratt Street Ale House. Listed at 7% abv on the menu.

A: The scotch ale is a toasty brown-red color, on the border between opaque and translucent, especially in the darker environs of the Ale House. A tan head, nearly 3/4 of a finger, lingered and laced throughout the pint.

S: The nose, especially after a day of Belgian ales at Max's, was pleasantly malty, thick and roasted with a mild peat smoke presence.

T: The ale has a warming roasted malt body, full and rich, that contentedly lingers on the palate. Biscuit breadiness, along with a peat smoke fullness, have just a hint of sweetness. An earthy hop bitterness defines the end of each sip.

M: The maltiness of the ale sat very nicely on the palate, offering biscuit and peat, without a strong alcohol presence.

D: I enjoyed the warming fullness of the beer, a good night cap to the day.

Note: This beer is listed here at 5.2% ABV. However, I was told by the brewer last night that it weighs-in around 7.2%...

A- Poured with a 1/2" light tan head, with decent retention and some nice lacing. By the end of the drink, there was still a nice haze layer in place. The body was a beautiful clear garnet color with no visible carbonation observed from the sides of the glass.

S- Spicy pale and candy malt aromas are dominant, with a VERY faint trace of yeast esters. Some faint low-alpha hop aroma and mild smokiness were also kicking around in the background of the nose.

T- The malt character is crackerlike on the palate, and the yeast esters are barely detectable. The beer is perceived with some sweetness and smokiness in the middle, but that is quickly overtaken by some mild hop bitterness in the lingering finish.

M- A nice medium to firm body with an abundant amount of carbonation. The carbonation is moderately soft, but it could be a touch softer. Overall the mouthfeel is quite pleasing.

D- Goes down quick and smooth. The alcohol is exceptionally well-hidden in this brew... and I could enjoy sipping it year-round!

Had on cask at the Frisco Grille, Columbia, MD.

A- Pours a deep brown, somewhat hazy, with an off-white head.

S- Very yeasty, lots of ester, very sweet malt scent.

T- Very sweet malt, but yeasty, attributed to the cask, lots of flavor, balanced however.

M- Thin, almost watery, little carbonation (again attributed to the cask).

D- Overall a very drinkable Scottish ale.

Sat down at the Wharf Rat this weekend--what better place to enjoy a snowy afternoon--and sampled some new beers. This one comes around mostly as a winter seasonal. It apparently has an OG of 1058 and would be classified as a 90 shilling ale.

Pour as an imperial pint full of tawny, slightly cloudy brown liquid with a creamy off white head. Okay retention and excellent lacing.
Malty/fruity aromas.
All malty goodness here for you to enjoy. Loads of sugary caramel malt, with just a hint of peaty smokiness hinting in the background. (note: this may or may not have been enhanced by the roaring fire in their gigantic fireplace...)
Finished mostly clean, though maybe a bit sugary. You could have many, many of these.
