On French Oak
A - Served with a darker brown body with some nice ruby highlights...the head was tan and bubbly...it settled to a ring and had some decent lacing
S - There was a bit of a Belgian yeast funk going on...I picked up earthy tones from the hops and malts...the malts also presented themselves as slighty roasted
T - Again, there was that funk coming from the yeast strain...I would have liked more yeast flavor instead of that Saison-like funk...the malts...brown ale part of the beer...shined through in the middle...they gave off a nice chocolate flavor which was rolled off the palate nicely...the earthy flavors from the hops combine with the roasted malt to finish the beer
M - Medium bodied...the finish was earthy and roasted which coated the palate nicely
D - I wasn't picking up any oakiness from the firkin...I wasn't a fan of the saison-like funk I was picking up...but the chocoalte finish and earthy hop finish was the best part of the beer

From 10/22/10 notes. Had on tap at the Big Hunt in Washington, DC.
a - Pours a dark brown color with 2 inches of tan head and light carbonation evident.
s - Smells of roasted malts, caramel malts, chocolate, cream, and some fruity hops.
t - Tastes is similiar to the smell, but the chocolate comes out a lot more in the taste. Also some bitter hops, cream/vanilla, roasted malts, and caramel malts.
m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Very smooth and creamy; I really like the mouthfeel on this one.
d - A decent, above average dark ale. I haven't had Channel Crossing #1 yet and was hoping they would have that to try with it but no dice. Some nice hops and malts in the smell, would give another shot.

On tap at Max's. Described as a Belgian/English Brown Ale, I was rather intrigued.
Brown with light brown highlights, there's an off-white head with excellent retention and lacing. Truly gorgeous. The nose has plenty of English hop character, leafy and wet twig-like, with light sweetness and nutty, caramel and toffee characteristics. The palate opens with a pretty big English hop character, bitter and very earthy and leafy. Moderately sweet with caramel, toffee and nutty, the sweetness grows on the finish along with a hop character that again, has that leafy character. The combination is mildly Splenda-like, especially on the finish. Medium-light in body with medium-high in carbonation, the finish is drying and mildly artificial. Decent.
