★★★★½

Serving: Bottle
Bottled: Sept-11-2019 (Consumed Dec-29)
It pours opaque reddish brown with a whisp of tan head that stays a film throughout, but overall a little anemic. Some streaks of lacing. The aroma is predominately toasty, caramely malt, nutty, oily oxidation, leather and a slight bright fruitiness I'm guessing is also from the port barrel. The flavor is similar with rich port flavors and moderate oxidation notes, some burnt sugar, grape sweetness, some light phenolics. It is pretty dry with a slightly less-than-full body and some alcoholic warmth. It is a nice feel , but falls just shy of backing up the rest of it with that quaffable richness boozy beers can sometimes have (especially Belgians). A tasty beer all told. It is a little sticky but not quite cloying. The barrel comes through and truly does lend a port-like quality to the beer. I feel like the style and the barrel complement each other in a way as well. It is not completely on point to what it could be in my mind and is a little overwhelming in some ways (syrupyness and the oxidized character, although admittedly port-like) but is not bad at all, nice on a warm night, and seemingly exactly what DDC was going for. It definitely melds and improves as it approaches room temp. Glad to have tried it.

January 2018 bottle.
A - Deep ruby pour. Seems bright but darkness kinda messes with that. Fluffy two finger eggshell/beige head sticking to the glass as it goes down slowly. Mild carbonation coming up. Great rings of lace and a bit of corner retention.
S - Fantastic aroma. Lot's of dark fruit. Very Quad. Barrel isn't overly present. Yeast is there with some ester profile. Rich and enticing. Very vinous.
T - Sweet but not cloying. Lot's of date and blackberry notes. Barrel shows through with some woody notes and those dark fruits. Candied fruits. Sort of like an amped up Irish Red thing going on here.
M - Lovely mouthfeel. Classic Belgian character foaming up with lot's of good carbonation. Dry with lingering pruney character and wood.
O/D - Quite a lovely take on the style that you rarely see these days. I came up with Belgian styles and this hits me in the feels. The added barrel profile doesn't do much, but takes the beer forward in a good way. Nice stuff.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter
Bottled January 2018
A- bottle immediately gushed upon opening, a quick pour yielded a deep amber pour with a two-finger foamy white head that has great retention
S- as expected based off of the pour, the initial aroma is tart and acidic, with undertones of red fruits, fig, raisin and caramel
T- acidic tartness up front, followed by dark fruit notes of fig and raisin, sweet caramel and dark bread. The finish gives more malty sweetness, along with some port barrel and more tartness on the linger
M- medium-heavy body with moderate carbonation, foamy mouthfeel and creamy finish
O- this is definitely showing early signs of infection, as I can't imagine that tartness was intended for the style. Too bad, because the base beer would have been great without the sour effect

My bottle had a little leak going, received by mail in trade. Opened soon after receiving.
Lovely body and aroma typical of a good quad. The port barrel gives off subtle sweet vinous notes. A very nice sipper. Because of the leak, my bottle was a little under-carbed, but that did no harm to the taste.

Bottle: Poured a clear copper color ale with nice dark white foamy head with good retention and excellent lacing. Aroma of candi sugar with nice candy ester, some dry fruits with light port wine is quite fantastic. Taste is a great mix of candi sugar with candy ester, some dry fruits with some caramelized malt notes, toffee with some port wine notes also perceptible. Body is about average with good carbonation. Very enjoyable nightcap though maybe a tad too sweet.
