AphroRhum from Dieu du Ceil. Received 341 mL bottle in a Ninja strike from @Coronaeus. Stored at home at 40 degrees. Reviewed 5/10/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottle dated on rear label “2020-10-26 10:11 LOT:04”. Served at 51.8 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 60.8 degrees.
Appearance – 3.25
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Ruby brown (SRM 24), opaque. When rear-lite, ruby at the edges.
Head – Tiny (Maximum 0.8 cm, aggressive center pour), burnt umber, fizzy and poor retention, leaving a tight 0.2 cm ring of tiny bubbles and no cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3 – Weakly cocoa, no vanilla, no malt, no hops, no yeast, no rum. As the temperature approaches 57 degrees, a ghost of vanilla appears.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins with sweet light cocoa, no malt, no hops, no yeast, no vanilla, no rum. No ethanol (6.5% ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. No gastric warming. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. As we approach the end of the pour and 59 degrees, a slight tannin bitterness arrives.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.25 Surprisingly average brew from Dieu du Ciel, my favorite Canadian brewery. Everything is just plain weak.

Got this one from Pino this past summer. Cheers!
From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled 13 October 2017
Strong cacao and vanilla stout aged in rum barrels
APPEARANCE: A clear dark brown pour yields a three finger, looser, foamy tan head with huge retention. Bistre brown body with very high levels of carbonation for the style. Foamy head eventually fades to a full can and leaves some foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Piles of carbonation on this one. A slight wisp remains until the end leaving some foamy lacing as it empties.
SMELL: Rum, vanilla cream, milk chocolate and lactose on the nose. Decent strength.
TASTE: Rum, vanilla and some sweet toffee at the swallow. Bold finish of rum barrels, some oak, vanilla cream, milk chocolatey sweetness and some alcohol lingers on the palate.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes a bit mouth-coating.
OVERLL: Okay, but kind of boozy rum for the abv, which clashes a little bit. I really don’t think beers of this ABV should be in boozy spirit barrels, as they usually seem contradictory. That said, this was enjoyable enough and is worth checking out if you’re into DDC. Not something I’d necessarily care to re-visit anytime in the future though. Thanks again, Pino!
