Aged in Brandy barrels, this intensely malty Trappist-inspired brown ale is round and sweet, with notes of red fruit balanced by a hint of acidity.

From a 341ml bottle, dated 2022-06-17. De la caisse mixte hivernale contenant quatre bières de la gamme rėserve. Served in a tulip.
Pours a cloudy plum-brown with a scant finger of fizzy suds. The head dies back almost instantly, leaving a wispy cap, narrow collar and a spatter of slippery lacing.
Nose is robust, boozy, sweet and fruity. Aromas of stewed, dried fruits, plumped booze-soaked raisins.
Taste is straight-up chocolate-covered cherries and chewy brown bread. Dense, boozy and delicious.
Feel is smooth and mouth coating, medium-thin bodied relative to the style with ample bright, tingly carbonation contributing to the perception of an unexpectedly thin, almost watery finish. A big, comfortable, smouldering boozy warmth in the gullet, totally right and proper given the 10.5% abv.
Overall, a most excellent finish to the year! The label promised me intense caramel malt and red fruit and delivered chocolate-covered cherry liqueur to the extent that, had I not read the label, I might have thought ‘kirsch’ instead of brandy. I wish I had more than the one bottle!
