Bottle conditioned from my dad, and sporting a best before of 2006. Apparently he picked this up at a market. Fortunately its held up impecably.
Pours a very dark red, bordering on black, with a large tan head that showed great retention and lace. Nose of gently roasted malts, chocolate, and rich fruit. Upfront the taste is lightly sour damson (which is a plum-like fruit for those unfamiliar), before giving way to dusty chocolate, lightly roasted coffee, anise and smoke. Slightly dry, bitter finish. Decent body with low carbonation.
Certainly a drinkable beer, and a nicely done stout. Not sure if I'd want more than one in an evening because I've never been overly fond of stouts that have a sour edge, but I would happily have another some other day.
