Presentation: Sampled at Fernandes Brewery Tap on Friday 18th March during my Easter Trip to UK & Belgium.
Simple laminated paper pump-clip, as seems so popular these days, with one of those cheap white plastic clips on the back of it. Dark blue background with the words Oxbow, Three Rivers, 4.5%. £1.70 for the privilege of 20 ounces.
Appearance: Darkish Golden body with some amber hints. Off-white head had great staying power at first, but it soon went south and finished up as a broken covering that retained a halo appearance. Moderate carbonation.
Nose: Lemony citrus in the nose, my notes have the word Grainy lemons and wet hoppy sawdust, my memory serves me well, this had a distinctive nose that somehow attracted and repulsed at the same time. Weird. A 3.0 because it confused the hell out of me, I wasnt sure if I liked it or hated it.
Taste: Hoppy punch at the offset, light floral character with a hint of freshly squeezed lemons. Grainy pilsner malts in the last third and a rather tart dry finish. I think it is supposed to be hoppy, but it had a damp sawdust cum wet cardboard feel to it which fleetingly came and went rather annoying that, but a reasonable brew nonetheless.
Mouthfeel: Starch like conditioning somehow failed to support the breaking head after only a few mouthfuls. Felt good on the palate, nothing spectacular but a decent enough body to match the flavors.
Drinkability: OK. So-So. Not bad. Fair Enough.
Overall: It took me a while to get into this one after the awesome Roosters Yankee so I cut it some slack as I sat in a quiet corner and made some brief notes whilst trying not to look too geeky .but I marked it as a 3.3 overall without working out any composite scores, which I think is a fair reflection on the performance.
A new beer from a new Brewery for me; Three Rivers Brewery started in November 2003 and are based in Greater Manchester.
As we would say in Yorkshire...
