Very Good
Juicy DoubleJuicy Double
Notes: Crisp, west coast style double IPA with orange juice fermented through in secondary. A concept inspired by our Green Goose program to harness the juice of the oranges zested in the Sofie process that would otherwise go to waste!

I am in the midst of a small GI brewery horizontal as a part of the eradication of The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody. I am getting rid of them at a pretty good clip at this point & there are far fewer coming in so the end is actually within sight.

From the Bottle: "The Brew House Series"; "A crisp and citrusy Double India Pale Ale brewed with Orange Juice"; "Generously Hopped"; "An expert command of process & equipment is the hallmark of the beers in our Brew House Series"; "70 IBU".

My bottle had some age on it so following the Pop! of the cap, I went with a very slow, gentle pour into the awaiting glass. Once it was sufficiently decanted, an in-glass swirl raised two-plus fingers of soapy, foamy, rocky, tawny head with decent retention, leaving nice lacing in its wake as it fell. Color was solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was very citrusy and it made me think of Mandarin Oranges, if that is what they used. Mouthfeel was medium, a little light for this style. The taste was very orange-citrusy with a caramel malt backbone & I was reminded of the Brach's Orange Caramels that my maternal grandmother used to put in her candy dish for us. It also had some fusel heat to keep me on my toes. Finish was dry, but not overly dry. It was a Good, but not Very Good iteration of the style. YMMV.

Hardly noticed the "juicy" part of the beer. It poured and looked nice but it seemed like it was a "let's throw this and this in and what happens. If I see it again, I'll walk past it next time.

Appearance: Pours a hazy orange with the full three fingers; decent retention and a smattering of lace

Smell: Malty, with a candied orange aspect; pithy

Taste: Malt forward, with juicy orange flavors that devolve into pith and pine; a lot of bitterness in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate to high carbonation

Overall: Not sure what the brewery is shooting for here, though I note that the beer is nine month's old; still, a West Coast DIPA with orange juice.....why?

12/16/17: $9.50 20 ounce draft pour at Goose Island lounge at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Clear thin pour, minimal carbonation and head. Light hops and citrus aroma. Very firm taste, nice blend of hops offset by citrus. Mouth feel firm, good solid going down. Overall solid offering.

Looks orange hazed slightly with thin white creamy ecru head with fine bead
Smell is tropical citrus and light herbal aroma and subtle yeast ester
Tastes like tangerines with herbal hop flavor in secondary swallow with English yeast adding a dried fruit aspect and mild malt sweetness and peppery alcohol in the finish
Overall this is a nice double IPA but not overly citrus except for slight astringent in the back

Big haziness in this yellowish orange beer that lacked much head activity, save for about an inch of off white foam. Lacing is spotty at best as it pulled back to a thin layer. Nose starts out big barley before an over ripe fruit thing settles in. Nothing overly bitter in the nose, but that's where the taste begins; in the bitter. Wave of English style IPA bitterness gives way to olive, then maybe either a hint of super bitter OJ, or maybe it's a little imagined due to the oddly quenching body that tried to impress upon me something refreshing, like juice.... Super drinkable feel is probably the best selling point, as the after taste is mealy and a touch sour. Overall, I'm just bleh.

Any juicy notes, and there are a few, are dominated by the earthy hops. I liked this aroma (and probably the same hops) when they did their seasonal IPA's a couple of years ago and this was the autumn aroma. Worked well then. Not so much now, esp. for something advertised as "juicy". No juice here in the aroma. It does show eventually in the flavors as it warms and I hit the bottom of the glass, but until then earth and a little spice are the name of the game.
Nice orange color and cloudy. Full off-white head with very sticky foam. Body is close to what I prefer for DIPA with a little heft and even more stickiness. Prominent bitterness without crossing to excess - but boy it gets close. Fruit flavors from juice and hops show eventually, but are never forefront.
Many good parts but enough to make this drinkable but something to search for.

A decent double IPA. Head was about a finger and a half. Very clear yellow-orange. Slight pink grapefruit nose. Mild grapefruit and tangerine flavor. This is easy drinking and would be a good intro to IPAs; not as hoppy as I typically prefer.

Pours a hazy orange with a white head. Smells of alcohol, orange juice, and hops. Tastes of slightly bitter hops, sweet orange juice, and a little booze. Medium creamy body with medium carbonation. Overall a pretty good juicy IPA.

Bottled June 20th. Pours a clear light gold, over a finger of foam. Smells of orange peel, grapefruit, a sweetness coming from tropical fruit, grain. Orange peel, grapefruit, mango, some grain and perhaps even a mild oxidation. Alcohol is there but not too intrusive. Medium body, slick mouthfeel overall. Pretty nice but I would probably not buy again.

12oz bottle, bottled on 14 JUL 17
Orangey colored ale with a creamy ivory head. Aroma has plenty of orange zest along with some pine and bready caramel malt. Bold malt backbone with notes of sweet caramel malt, toasted grain, and bread that balances out bitter hop flavors of pine and orange zest; the orange juice provides a citrus burst of flavor that is noticeable but not overbearing as I expected. Full bodied, moderate carbonation, finishes bittersweet with orange, caramel, and pine lingering. Surprisingly the orange juice isn't overwhelming and provides some nice flavors. The more I drink, the sweeter it seems to be, but it's pretty good overall.

Bottled 7/14. Pours golden orange, with trace amounts of head and lacing. Slightly dank hop and mild malt scents. Taste is a dank hop forefront with a mildly bitter background. Very gentle feel for a beer this dank and bitter.

T-taste is of more orange and orange zest with a light pine finish

M-medium body and moderate carbonation

Overall a little one dimensional, but pleasant enough to finish

Pours a slightly hazy golden orange color. Good lacing.

Notes of tropical fruit and citrus. Rather subdued nose. Some corn or hay notes. Kinda boring.

Taste is good but not great. Middle of the road. Medium thickness. Generic citrus character. Not overly bitter. By no means a juice bomb.

Overall, taste is as expected. Inoffensive but nothing special. It paired well with a grilled burger, sautéed spinach, and garlic pasta. It gets a 80/100.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/24/2017. Pours slightly hazy deep golden amber/light orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big tangerine, orange juice, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, melon, lemon/orange peel, light pepper/pine, toasted bread, light caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops, orange juice, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, orange juice, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, melon, lemon/orange peel, light pepper, pine, toasted bread, light caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus rind, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, orange juice, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, melon, lemon/orange rind, pepper, pine, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops, orange juice, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance. Slight lingering hop astringency through the glass. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Mildly warming 8.3%. Overall this is an excellent fruited DIPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops, orange juice, and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Nice hop profile and not overpowering on the orange juice. They meld together in great balance. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank on hops; nice malt balance, without being overly sweet/heavy feeling. A very enjoyable offering.

Not very juicy, not very double. Had it fresh on draft at the Fulton St brewery. If you are going to call this beer that, at least live up to the style. One was enough - not because of ABV but because it wasn't that good of an ale.

Pours a slightly hazy orange amber color with a small white head that dissipated fairly quickly to a small cap that leaves some lacing on the glass. The aroma is mildly hoppy with very little orange. The flavor is a little more orange forward with a decent hop bite. Nice feel on this one and overall a fun beer.

Poured a copper orange body with minimal head and the aroma is dominated by citric smells. Smooth, floral, earthy, very hoppy and simple with a dry finish and while nothing outstanding it works well and everything is balanced.

Nothing spectacular, but a very nice double IPA on tap at the tasting room at 1800 W. Fulton. The tour guide said it was brewed as a small batch in order to use the oranges that were peeled to make Sofie. The last sixtel kicked while we were there, but the tour guide said it may be brewed again because it was so popular.
