Goose Island "Islay"
$8 / 5 oz. @ Goose Island Brewhouse Philadelphia on 06/02/18
Notes: 11.8% ABV. Black body beneath a tan head. Intense peat in the nose. Some caramel, roastiness, and alcohol - it's almost a little frightening. The flavor proves that its bark is worse than its bite. There's lots of caramel to the rich malt, and a soft roastiness. The smokiness is smooth like burnt wood, not like harsh and phenolic peat. It's rich, sweet, and alcoholic - apart from it's being a smoked beer I'd call it a Wee Heavy. It has a moderate to median bitterness, and a lingering, dry, peaty, slightly spicy alcoholic finish with a drop of caramelish malt that just doesn't want to fade. Medium-full in body with a velvety, creamy mouthfeel. Exceptional! I've never had a beer like it.
