On nitro-tap @ Goose Island Clybourn (Chicago, IL) on 4/23/10. Served in a pint glass. Beer menu states that this is an Irish Stout brewed with mint, cherries, and Intelligentsia Black Cat Espresso.
Pours a DEEP (near brown at times) amber, with a ½ finger of light mocha colored head. Great nitro look, retaining with a creamy richness that leaves a ton of spotty foam all down the sides of the glass. The aroma starts with a sturdy base of chocolate malts but then that espresso kicks things up BIG TIME in nose, with yes, some mint showing itself within the textures of the coffee as well. This is just so sharp and roasty smelling, with some subtle fruity flavor coming out in the background.
The taste is dry and roasty on the tongue, with the espresso once again being VERY strong. Sweet chocolate malts and fruity cherry notes hang on the edges. There is a touch of mint here (that seems to hang with the light earthy hops and citric character of the coffee that are present) but it isn't nearly as noticable as it was in the aroma. Lots of lingering roast and a bone dry feel sum up the finish on this. The mouthfeel is lighter-medium bodied, with a crisp bite up front from all of the roast and coffee but the nitro keeps soft and slick as you swallow. Just an effortless drikibility on this and that 5% is spot on for sessionalbility.
Well this was certainly one of the more innovative Irish Stouts that I've had, being cranked up on espressso but the softer accents of mint and fruit and the nitro-pour kept this smooth and creamy on the palate. Pretty wicked little session beer here (with a lot of flavor packed into for the size) that the wife and I couldn't get enough of.
