Drank this beer on-tap on July 29, 2010. Notes written down and archived...until now. Wiseman Justin reporting:
Appearance: White three finger head. Lacing is superb but head retention is merely "well above average." Color is an opaque blackness that turns a reddish brown only when held up to the brightest lights at the thinnest portion of your glass.
Smell: Roasty hops; maybe some pine. Carmel is floating in there too. Not sure if the style is good or not. I'm not all that impressed.
Taste: A great tasting beer. It's hoppy but soothing. The caramel flavor is present smoothing the transition from hoppy to finish. Not bitter and not a palette wrecker. It's, what I like to call, a solid beer.
Mouthfeel: Slight everything. Very bitter at first but the caramel smooths it out fast. Carbonation adds bite.
Drinkability: I hate this category.

Served in a snifter at Goose Island-Clybourn 7/20/10.
A: Served pitch black with a dark tan head. Smallish, less than a finger, that showed some decent retention.
S: Heavily roasted malt, dark roast coffee, and sticky green hops.
T: See above with some sweet tropical fruit. Who would've thought that something so dark could taste so sweet with tropical fruit?
M: Dry with a slightly minty (alcohol?) twang.
D: Phenominal. This needs to be bottled.
