Served in a snifter at the Clybourn brewpub.
Gotta end on a high note, so why not a barrel-aged stout? It pours a straight obsidian topped by a finger of lightly golden tan foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, bourbon, oak, vanilla, strong caramel, and molasses. The taste holds notes of roasted malts, bourbon, light oak, and a touch of booziness. It's less complex than the smell, focusing a bunch more on the barrel than anything. Shame, really. It's not all bad by any stretch, but I was hoping for a bit more from this somehow. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda dry finish. Overall, a bit of a disappointment. Just like BCS to a degree, the barrel o'ershadows things here, to the detriment of full enjoyment of the beer.

Had a glass of this on-tap while at the Clybourn brewpub over the New Year. Served into a 10oz glass:
A - pours a black core with brown roast tones around the edges. Really no head but some foam around the edges. Faint lacing.
S - Chocolate, caramel and burnt brown sugar. Really thick and creamy smell with those oats and bourbon really coming through. Hints of vanilla and damp oak. Great smell.
T - Only slightly bourbon forward but really goes well with the roast and oats. Little bit of chocolate and caramel but not too heavy. Some lactose and vanilla in the finish.
M - Smooth and creamy but not too drying from the roast. Think with the lack of carbonation but all in all not too bad.
O - This one wasn't too bad but I wasn't overly impressed. I only had one glass during the entire trip, so that kind of says something. I love barrel aged brews, but this one didn't exactly knock my socks off. Would have it again if given the chance but wouldn't actively seek it out.

I had this on-tap at the Clybourn location.
This one sounded too good to be true judging by the menu description and everyone in my party ordered this one at some point, so I figured it was time for me to take the plunge as well.
A: This was a dead, mean looking brew, but what barrel-aged beer isn't? No head, visible carbonation, or lacing. It just looked like a big vat of pitch black, licorice juice.
S: Very buttery, bourbon forward, and I also got a tinge of the earthy grain bill created by the oats.
T: Not only was this a big bourbon bomb, this was also the perfect dessert beer. I got a good bit of wholesome grains, rounded out by chocolate and more than a hint of vanilla.
M: Despite the barrel-aging, this was not a high octane brew.... quite the contrary. That fact made this a medium-bodied (medium thick), bourbon delight. Very low in carbonation and the lacing was almost non-existent.
O: This brew was just a flat out great idea. I guess this is only the second review of this one, and I hope this beer sticks around long enough to see many more!

Served in a snifter at GI-Clybourn 12/24/11.
A: Served coal black with a thin wafer of off-white foam on top. Retention was pretty short lived with a few specks of lace left behind.
S: Strong bourbon on the nose when first served. As it came up to temp some roasty malt and dark chocolate came out as did a touch of vanilla.
T: See above.
M: Oatmeal Stout smoothness coupled with a slight touch of bourbon roughness. Good balance.
O: Very nice lower abv BA stout.
