Smell was carmel with hint of zest.
look was nice and pitch black with nice spiders with carmel brown strecks downt the glass.
tasted smooth with a bite of coco. unfortantly the feel was very c02. the carbonization just took away the second half of each drink. I have to say I ended up sipping down all of it with pleasure for the most part.

Served in a nonic pint glass at the Clybourn brewpub.

The Pre-Gold Box Excursion refuses to stop, heading for a nice stout from the cask engine. It pours a straight obsidian topped by a finger of light tan foam. The nose comprises sweet molasses, roasted malts, candied orange peel, dark chocolate, and a vague sense of mandarin orange syrup. The taste focuses on chocolate syrup and candied orange peel, with a hint of roasted malts, and a finish awash in coffee. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light carbonation and a consequently smooth feel. Overall, a nice stout regardless, though I think the cask-conditioning helps a bit in the mouthfeel department.

On cask at the Clybourn brewpub.

A - difficult to get a real read on this in the dim bar lighting, but it appears to be a chocolate-black in color. Two fingers of lustrous head sticks around for a little bit.
S - I'm getting a fair amount of citrus and malt
T - Subtle hops, chocolate.
M - Medium body, low carbonation. Feels great in the mouth and goes down easy.
O - A great lunch beer (enjoyed with a plate of cheeses and meats). Moderate ABV yet tons of subtle flavors make this a real winner.

This brew was served from the tap at the Goose Island Brewpub in Chicago, IL. It arrived in a nonic, showing a deep black-brown coloring, with the faintest reddish hues let up around the edges. It held a one and a half finger tall head of latte colored bubbles. This showed nice retention, leaving thick patterns of lacing all down the glass, and a nice ring crowning the liquid for most of the tasting. No haze or sediment was noted, and carbonation appeared to be medium. The nose filled with roasted chocolate and toasted brown malts, apricot and strawberry sweetness, and bright nectary and soured lemony hops. With warmth came more smoky blackness of grain, herbal phenols, mineral, and hollow booziness. Our first impression was that there was surprising hops and fruitiness on the palate, pairing against the darkly roasted malts. As we sipped, clean brown malts, bittered citric hops, syrupy cane sugar sweetness, soured cherry, and apricot sweetness started things off. The middle peaked with light coffee acidity, with a deepening of the malts to include more chocolates, and significantly more roast and smoke. Spicy phenol bitterness enhanced and played off the other soured notes, dragging us down into the finish. Here we met more of those fully roasted chocolate malts, lactic sourness and light milky softness, syrupy nectarine sugariness, light milky softness, and herbal and citric hops. The aftertaste breathed of chalky yeast, chocolate and brown malts, green grass hoppiness, big smoky char, and faint banana ester breadiness. The body was on the lighter side, and carbonation was medium to high. There was soft slurp and froth, with decent smack and finishing pop, but the latter was thin. The mouth was lightly coated, if at all, but did show a nice chalky dryness and warmth by the end of the sip. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank easily.

Overall, what we liked best about this beer was the flavoring. The beginning opened with surprising fruitiness, while we moved to include a wildly unexpected robustness of hops, which even showed a range, from sweet citrics to a grassy wash at the end. Then there was the smoke. This too was much more robust than anticipated, helping to give depth to the malts, and to allow them to stand against the other starkly present components. All of this was less apparent in the aroma, but that took an interesting twist as well. With warmth this showed a cleaned garbage smell, much like a freshly cleaned bathroom at the beach on a hot summer’s day. While this may sound horrendous, it added a seriousness that fit decently well into the beer. Either way this was an easy glugging, unique offering.
